Reading through the posts recently, it seems that there are a few misconceptions about terms used, eg 1080 32" LCD TVs. I have not seen any 32" LCD TVs with 1080 horizontal resolutions.

So I thought maybe the more knowledgable forum members might want to contribute to a glossary to help the newbie

What do you think?

There are enough of these scattered around nearly every forum or audio/HT site worldwide - why are we re-inventing the wheel :D

Google & Search are your friend

Sharp and Samsung make them.....not sure if they'll be on sale in OZ though.......they'd make a great PC monitor.

Yes, but people were saying that certain 32" LCD TV are 1080 when they are actually 1366X768. That can become very confusing to newbies. Like I said, I've never seen or heard of any 1080 32" LCD TV (please don't mention the 30" Dell monitor as more than capable of 1080 horizontal lines). There's no point mentioning models that are not (goingto be) released in OZ. Same goes for 1080 37" models.

I kinda like Sony's definition for TVs ie SD=576i, HD=720 etc and Full HD=1080 horizontal lines. Obviuosly in Oz, our HD refers to 576p, 720p or 1080i.

1080 is a bit of a waste of time on a 32” display unless you are going to be viewing it from about 1.3 meters.

Since not many people watch a TV from that close, there is probably not a lot of demand for such a thing.

40” and up is where the market is theses days.

Salespeople call full-HD as 1080p. For the "other HD" they use 1080i as it sounds more impressive than 786p or 720p.

They can say that's not misleading because these panels can receive 1080i (from fta or upscaling dvd, etc).

If you want to push the point you can quiz them why they don't call SD panels as 1080i -- many can receive 1080i too !!

SONY MUST BE PUNISHED OR DESTROYED

That’s a bit harsh, but a good kick in the pants would not go astray.

Sony have become complacent, but its up to the opposition to put the competitive pressure on to keep the bastards honest.

That's because people get confused (and salespeople have vested interests in keeping people confused) about the difference between Input compatibility (e.g 1080i) and Display resolution (e.g. 768 lines)

Don't you think it's also true that the salepeople are confused?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they're really decent people just trying to get by{I'm sure some are}, but think about how hard is it to truthfully answer these two questions...."1-which LCD has the best PQ....2-which LCD also plays PS3/Xbox/Bluray without a hitch"

One only has to look at mobile phones to see how far behind SONY are compared to Samsung, Motorola and Nokia.

The problem I have with SONY and Pioneer, is that despite their inflated prices, they're rarely the best product in any given category despite the hype.{I'm not saying they're crap}.

If you think I’m a Sony fan, you would be wrong.

I normally avoid Sony products like the plague, as they have traditionally been overpriced and often not better then competing products.

The only Sony product I have ever owned other then the SXRD is a G500 21” CRT monitor back in 2000. I only purchased it because it was the best PC monitor I had ever seen and is still right up there 7 years later. At $2,500 it was not cheap, but I had tried cheaper options from other manufacturers and in that case the Sony was worth the extra money.

These days Sony has become much more price competitive, they need to be.

Products like the SXRD’s are outrageously good value for money and really have no competition at this time.

I feel yer pain!

I got that monitor back around then (late 1999) - at cartel pricing like you say ($2500) - and only because the Hitachi wasn't available through any of my distributors.

After a few years of good use, it became progessively more deranged until it died a bit over a year ago.

Of course, it had run for a good 50,000 hours with only a few dozen power cycles in that time!

That's fine.

As I said, I don't think either Pioneer or SONY are crap.....but many people assume they're the best, and I can't stand the idea of companies trading on their reputation and duping people.

If their products aren't the best, then people are paying for the advertising and marketing.......and who in their right mind would knowingly cop that!!

Yes the next hardly normal person answers my question 'What HD displays have you?' then he shows me a 720 resolution, to which I reply 'No HD - 1080!' and he/she says 'Oh you mean true HD', may be strangled to protect the rest of the HD fans.

Be sure to carry some monopoly money to HN next time, and when asked how you'll pay offer it to the drone.

If he finds issue with it, proclaim "Oh you mean true money" ...
