Hi there,

I've been browsing around the forum and have noticed more than a few digs at LG.

I am looking at buying a TV, and the LG 42" 42lc2d seems like it might be an option.

I'm just starting to do some research on my options, mostly I will be using the TV to play next gen consoles (Wii, 360 and PS3, plus some last gen console games occasionally too). Some DVD playing, very little TV watching - as I said, mostly gaming.

What's the problem with LG's in general though? Bad performance, bad build quality, poor customer service, what?

Feel free to recommend me any models to start looking at for gaming, I'm looking to spend about 3K - 3.5K, hoping to get up to 40/42" size-wise.

Cheers,

Wom.

For that price took at the Sony V series. If you aren't looking for digital TV tuner, then the Sony S series would be great value, too.

I've never owned an LG product that hasn't had some major flaw.

Yeah, I should probably have mentioned that I don't really care about built-in tuners and PVR's and whatnot. I will start researching the V series, ta.

Tomohawk,

Been looking at the V and S series as per you suggestion.

But I'm thinking the S series might actually be a better option for me.

The V only has one component in, whereas the S has 2 (this is actually quite important to me for hooking up multiple consoles and I noticed it about the V series right away).

Both only have one HDMI input though

The S series will still pickup normal SD brodacast, like an ordinary old television, right? I just need a set-top box in order to receive HD broadcast?

Anyone know if there are any major differences between the two, picture wise?

The S has an analogue tuner, not SD (as this refers to digital tv). It's unlikely that analogue will provide an acceptable quality picture, so that you may need a set-top box. You can get boxes that will only do SD digital for around $60 (maybe even less), but these are HD screens so they can benefit from being fed a HD signal.

I know the difference in picture quality between S and V has been discussed here before - it might be useful to do a search to see what info you can find.

LG don't just cop a hammering on this forum. I was looking at buying a front loading washer machine today and did a few searches and it appears the service or should i say lack of service from LG seems to stems to all their items.. Several different sites all with people leaving comments about how dissatisfied they are with their LG product and the service from LG after something goes wrong.

I was handing over my $ for my new Samsung washer when the lady beside me was talking to another salesmen stating she wants to buy a washing machine and will look at any brand except LG - saying she still has her LG washing machine which is under warranty sitting in her Laundry waiting for LG to rectify the 5th breakage in 12 months, I had to have a little laugh.

I personally dont own an LG product but after reading the reviews people are leaving cant bring myself to buy one due to the fact that IF it did turn out bad I would be kicking myself knowing I had pre-purchase knowledge of other peoples dilemas with LG.

even my Korean friends don't buy LG products. heard a few stories about LG sending refurbished products to retailers overseas without telling the truth, shocking!

I've actually heard good things about LG's customer service. The main issue I have with them though is that their quality control leaves a lot to be desired. The build quality is also fairly shoddy most of the time though they've got plenty of friends in that department. You might as well buy a no-name Chinese throw-away though. Some of their TVs over the years have had design flaws that would leave most TV engineers shaking their heads.

If a store lets a customer have 5 repairs on a product less than 12mths old, I wouldn't give them a cent of my money. Any store worth dealing with would replace the product for the customer. I feel sorry for the customer.

My 2cents worth, Samsung are a step up from LG, but in plasma the Panasonics are worth the extra $500 RRP easily. LCD, The Samsung are a good cheap LCD, but the Sony is (arguably) the best.

I have 3 LG products.

1) DVD/DivX player which is still going great after 2 years without a software upgrade.

2) DVD/Divx VCR combo player which I brought based on the performance of player 1. After a year the VCR portion is going great but the DivX and burnt DVD playback has always been problematic (can't really take it back as it plays original discs perfectly).

3) A microwave - so far, so good.

LG is often a little cheaper than the other brands and I would have got an LG screen (CRT as I am not ready for the flat stuff yet) except for 2 problems.

1) The well documented and ongoing HD tuner issues.

2) The LG red/black issue. I have a friend who used to be a TV salesman and he pointed this out to me when I was shopping and a can't see beyond it now. To make the reds seem brighter next to other displays on the floor, LG beefs up the contrast a lot. This means that all blacks and dark greys merge into the one deep black and shadow detail is universally lost. You can't get this out with the user menu - not sure if you can adjust it in the service menu.

Samsung have the opposite contrast problem. Samsuing reds sometimes look pink but atleast you get to see various tones of red and black. The individual Samsung colour levels can be tweaked in the service menu.

I believe Sony just fine tunes Samsung panels to a really nice quality, which, if you want to take the time with a Samsung panel you can do yourself.

The thing about a TV, especially a HDTV, is that you're main purpose is fun/enjoyment.....so if there's problems, you may ruin that experience.

Now compare it to a dishwasher.......does it really matter if the item has a few quirks, prolly not if it was much cheaper, however....I'd never buy a chum chow TV, cause I'll be looking at it all the time.

Anyway, if you buy anything of substantial cost these days without using the net, you're a nutter....end of message.
