Core 360 To Be Discontinued?

Recommended Posts

So I was off trying to figure out if the new rumoured Wal-Mart HD player would mean you could buy a stand alone and a 360 for the same price or less than a PS3, and while checking prices on wiki (I have an awful memory), found that the rrp of the 360 for Australia seems to have changed, and they are saying the core system is to be discontinued?

No idea if it's true or not, the link near that statement goes to an old article, so I'm still looking for info, I have so far found some rumours that MS will dump it now that the PS3 is dumping the 20gb model, and apparently also because the Wii is kicking it's ass in that price range, but nothing conclusive yet...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360

The other interesting thing is the listed Au prices have also changed, the Premium is listed at $599, and the Core at $399, now I'm fairly sure they were the same as the Xbox site like a week ago when I was last there, or am I just losing my mind?

Ok, maybe my bad, or something weird is going on, if you visit Xbox_360 is lists the lower prices etc, but visit XBox_360 and it's got the old/current prices etc.

I'm confused, but either way it's got me wondering if MS will dump the Core now that PS3 have dumped their base model?

actually i was trying to find a core pack today in adelaide and i was told by toys'r'us and dick smiths people that it was indeed being discontinued in australia.

Of course I'd never trust sales assistants to know anything about product. If Microsoft had pulled it from sale it would be news...at least on gaming sites.

I expect the core will be around for a good while yet, at least till Microsoft can sell the current premium for the current core price. In the US at least MS likes having a console at or below that psychological price of $299. And any price drop won't be happening till after the 65nm revision I imagine.

yeah Australia wont get a price drop in any of the 360's until october/november, mainly due to MS wanting to reduce manufacturing costs by going to 65nm. The price drop will then happen in the US and will filter through to Australia a couple of months after the US gets the drop.

Too many people waiting for the Elite for price drops IMO, they are going to be dissapointed...

The Core won't be going anywhere. Once they have there first wave of price drops, MS will probably try and match up the Core to the price of the Wii.

You know I honestly don't think MS will bother trying to compete with the Wii, if they tried to price match it, Nintendo would just pull the price down $50-$100, as it stands the little Wii apparently only costs like $200 to make, neither MS or Sony can compete with that price wise.

And on a long search for Core 360 info, I found a fair bit of speculation that MS will dump the Core model when prices come down, one German site that is apparently well know for being right, has said the Core model will be gone late this year or early next year.

Sony is dumping it's base model, and talking about an upgrade, and MS is bringing in a new model, so really it kind of makes sense to dump the Core 360, I just can't see MS selling three models when everyone else is selling just one.

looks like a repositioning exercise.... the Elite will take the top stop and the the Premium will now be the entry level ......
