bammac
Just jumped on my PS3 which requested a system update. I am now downloading update 1.7. Funny, I have not read a thing about it on the net yet, or any background on what the update includes.

Hydrology
mines updatig as i speak anyone try updating via meda storage didnt work 4 me (on update 1.6) At the moment there isnt a downloadable file available for this new update. I used a USB thumbdrive to update the 1.6 FW last time and it worked a treat. You have to create a folder called PS3 (all in caps) and then a subfolder called UPDATE (caps) for the PS3 to recognise the update when doing it from media. Skid_MacMarx
Sony PS3 Firmware 1.70 adds PS2 Rumble SupportPosted on Thu, 19 Apr 2007 02:05:00 CDT Sony releases the firmware 1.70 update for the PS3 is supposed to improve game play performance and adds rumble support for PS2 games and controllers. Rumble is missing in the PS3 SIXAXIS controller. The new firmware lets you at least enjoy force feedback on Playstation 2 games if you own a USB rumble controller that is supported. You cannot connect a PS2 controller to the Playstation 3 as it does not support the interface and only accepts USB controllers. Sony lists only the following few compatible force feedback controllers: Streetcar GO! Controller TYPE2, Streetcar GO! Shinkansen private controller, Hori Flight stick 2 and GT-FORCE Pro. These are mostly Japanese market only controllers. Not sure how many of them are actually out there. Additionally you need to have a PS2 game that actually supports these controllers. The Hori Flight Stick 2 is listed on Play-Asia but out of stock. http://www.i4u.com/article8617.html

Felix..
In the limited amount of downloading I've done so far on the PS3 I've found the transfer rates somewhat inconsistent. Some things, even large files, can d/l damn fast whilst other stuff seems to take forever. Whether that is due to downloading from different servers, variable internet traffic at different times of the day, or something else, I have no idea. But it has gotta be an issue with the PS3 network and not my own local network or ADSL2+ connection.

I agree with Felix it must have something to do with the traffic.. time of day.. etc
abdelrm
Didn't take me long either - 15 - 20 minutes tops. is every new ps3 before being released to stores updated with the latest patch? the ps3 that are in store since the launch don't have 1.60 or 1.70 when some buys one and goes to update it will they need to download each version released seperately or will it be just added on to every new release (ie 1.70 update contains its updates as well as the 1.60) Sorry if it is a bit worded in a confusing way
AndrewW
For me, It only took 15 - 20 minutes... I agree with Felix it must have something to do with the traffic.. time of day.. etc probably, it was 7pm on the night the patch was released ... btw, for those of you waiting for an iso for the update. I wouldn't be too worried about doing the network update. Unlike the HD-A1 which happily brick your player if you interrupt it mid-download, the PS3 actually downloads the update to local disc first and then carries out the actual update ... so by using an ISO you are just skipping the first step. You are not actually reducing the chances of a brick at all. Andrew.

abdelrm
I gather this system software update (ie. 1.7) includes all features contained in previous versions. wouldn't that mean the file size will increase as they add / remove / improve features. Unless every six months or so they disregard all but the most recent of recent updates
