BribieG Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Qantas announced today that they are going to trial allowing mobile usage on planes. Initially just texting or emails allowed. God help us, it's bad enough on a 45 minute train journey now: "Yeh f**k you'll never believe what that **** Kylie like did to me like the other f**king day, like who does that .." "I'm like on the train like going to the doctaah like with my fathaah (female teen accent) and see you lataah ... like hayy guess like what like i did like at the weekend..." "I f**ken paid that bill... now you listen here a**sehole the trouble with your f**ken company is that..." Imagine having to put up with that crap for 25 hours to London! Maybe Qantas will offer suspended animation pods in the future so you wake up at your destination.
Kent Rigel Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Okay, normally I'm against terrorist fear driven resistrictions, like not being able to take more than 100 mL of water in a clear plastic bottle on a plane because it may be liquid explosives. But here's your opportunity to use the system's paranoia to your benefit... cry out about the dangers of the 'mobile phone grenade'. Mobile phones are being touted continuesly as the terrorist's new ally, having been used as denotation devices in several bombs recently. If someone removed the innards of a medium sized mobile phone and replace it with C4 and then simply used the remaining electronics as a detenation circuit they could make a serviceable grenade. Surely some CIA desk jockey managed to conjure that up in a fit of donut-induced paranoia at some point. If it stopped me from having to listen to James' Party last week or the Tight wad step dad or the [obscenity] [profanity] whoever I'd gladly push the fear and propaganda button.
50mxe20 Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Que? There is no ban on taking phones on planes and there never has been. You are just asked to switch it off. Who's to stop a terrorist from ignoring that request and blowing a plane to smithereens long before now. I'm with BribieG, it would drive everyone nuts if you were allowed to talk loudly on a mobile phone.
Gas Man Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 there was an organisation that pushed the implimentation of "quiet" places (i can't remember the name. There was a story a while ago on them and it was that most people would prefer mobile phones to be banned on planes so that it remains one of the sanctums where you could go and not hear the babble of incessent chatter.
Aloysius Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Maybe we could demand the "Cone of Silence" a la Maxwell S. for those availing themselves of this new found freedom to bore the pants off their fellow travellers. Perhaps a massive reduction in those wanting to avail themselves of this "improved" Qantas service and moving to a quieter airline might sway the attractiveness of the idea.
FMB Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Do the execs at Qantas not watch the Chasers war on everything? Have they never seen Clive, the slightly too loud commuter? Surely that alone would be sufficient justification to continue the ban on using mobile phones on planes.

Who's to stop a terrorist from ignoring that request and blowing a plane to smithereens long before now. I was merely suggesting that it is a pity that while banning matches, nail clippers, nail files, aersol cans, bottles full of water and the kitchen sink that they couldn't just lump mobile phones under the 'threat to national security' and ban people from carrying them onto planes... it's the one time I would welcome the paranoia.

Mcrackn Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Why not text and internet surfing only on mobiles, if it makes a noise or you talk on it it gets confiscated until the end of the flight
50mxe20 Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Why not text and internet surfing only on mobiles, if it makes a noise or you talk on it it gets confiscated until the end of the flight And if it explodes, no need to confiscate at all.

Thudd1503560234 Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 Another downside to allowing mobile usage is that you'll miss the spectacle of when the plane touches down at the end of the flight there's the mad rush of everyone to switch on their mobile and get/make those essential messages that just can't wait another 5 minutes until they're in the terminal ("I've just landed, I'll meet you in a minute at the baggage carousel").
Mcrackn Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 On every phone I've had you can turn off keypad tones
Austen Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 On every phone I've had you can turn off keypad tones Yes, but, and no need to be specific here, just how many people of the "annoying ilk" that would be the ones who TXT on the 'plane, have ever, out of consideration for others, turned their keypad tones off ? Zero ?? None ?? Ziltch ?? S.F.A ?? Am I getting close !!! Austen.
Mcrackn Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 Agreed, none. So confiscate their phones and leave me with mine
Austen Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 Agreed, none. So confiscate their phones and leave me with mine Hey, What was that, the 'plane was two minutes late taking off, so you'll be two minutes late ? Yes dear, I love you too. OK Honey, see you then. Bye........Beep

Kent Rigel Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 Mobiles are permitted in case of hijacking... The entire point is that mobile phones don't function at 10km altitudes without a substation relay in the actual plane to boost the transmission and reception. One simple experiment involving an answering machine and a multi-dialing mobile phone design showed that at 30,000 feet the probability of a sucessful mobile phone connection to the ground is 0.04%. I really don't care to go into the conspiracies surronding the 9/11 plane hijacking phone calls... because that'll complete derail what I'm trying to impart. The fact the Qantas is allowing the idea of mobile phone connections on planes means it wasn't feasible/possible before... so if they don't facilitate it then everybody's mobile phones will be useless anyhow.

Mobile reception varies, but is possible without relays. It isn't what the system was designed for, and there can be some interesting outcomes. Certainly, you're not going to get any reception in much of Oz, but in more densely populated countries there is greater coverage available, even at altitude.
