I am not sure where to post this so please move it if not suitable.

As of yesterday I have noticed that Ten have been showing a frame or two of a white grid on a black background during their programming. It happened once yesterday just before The Simpsons and four times (once during a commercial) through House tonight. It isn't a reception issue - does anyone know what it is?

looks like it is a guide to use to make sure the graphics they put on such as RPG or logo fits around the size of the squares. (ten logo is the size of a square)

Squashed credits and banner adverts during programming are obviously not working, so Ten are clearly going down the subliminal advertising route.

Insert a couple of frames with the text "Watch Big Brother - 7:00pm weeknights" and all of Australia tunes in.

That looks a lot like a Chyron lineup page.

Why would that be during a show then?

I actually said that to someone last night after they turned to me and said "what was that?"...

Bloody annoying.

Couldn't agree more. It just strikes me as strange that whatever it is, it is happening during normal programming.

That's nice of TEN, putting on a nice test pattern for those CRT owners to adjust their sets with.

Hahah nicely put!

Wait, what's a CRT?

Oh that's right, it's that giant box I have sitting in the corner there collecting dust. (Does make me feel guilty, as it's a really nice CRT, working perfectly!)

Ten seem to have issues there is alot of flickering been happening in neighbours this week, and screen jumped earlier tonight and sound dropped.

But alot of time its just flickers of white things on neighbours.

The first time I decided to try watching a movie after that awful solidmark was added (Hollowman) and they had glitches all the time. The below image happened for two frames then it went fine for five and a further two with just the watermark on a black background (low quality logo). This is starting to get annoying Ten.

I could swear it was UC afterwards too but the quality was shocking when I looked carefully (water coming down plus a semi-transparent Kevin Bacon).

All I can think of is that if they are having this much trouble now, how bad will it get when they add 5.1 capabilities? Since they added the watermark and (as you say) have used it for all feeds, there has been nothing but problems. For me Ten went from the only station I watched to the one I avoid. If you get past that logo there are simply too many glitches to make it worthwhile (I might be going too far but it is true).

It changed back to the HD playout on friday in neighbours half way through it was SD first half, I noticed the quality was more sharper for neighbours when they use the old system and the watermark was less brighter! then screen flickered and then the quality went blurry and the HD watermark was back, the new conversion does degrade the quality quite a bit, Also when they changed back to the HD system the sound was out of sync then ten fixed it 20 seconds later and the sound went away for a second.

I noticed for a minute (that I watched) that The Simpsons had the older watermark, it is so much better this way. The old program name when returning from break on HD was also better without that childish blue or yellow box that folds out (making it near impossible to read the white text for yellow).

What you say about the quality I believe, having watched Hollow Man at ~14.5Mbps and being poor quality on faster motion would never have happened a few weeks back. I still haven't heard a decent reason for watermaking to this day either.

These grids and patterns simply seem too much of a coincidence to be anything else. If anyone from Ten is listening, go back to as it was.

Which way had the old blue?

I noticed the PG WS signs are different on HD to the old SD version.
