Primordial Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Hi, I've bought a commercial Panasonic 42" HD Plasma TH-42PHD8WK. Inputs i have available are as follows: Composite S-Video 15-Pin D-Sub The user manual states that the 15 Pin D-Sub VGA style connection on the back of the TV is selectable through the menu to either: MINI D-SUB 15PIN (Component) MINI D-SUB 15PIN (RGB) It also says: PC (HIGH-DENSITY MINI D-SUB 15PIN) R,G,B/0.7 Vp-p (75-ohm) HD, VD/1.0 - 5.0 Vp-p (high impedance) I assume that this means that to connect the Foxtel Digital to my panel (via DIGITAL RGB signal) i should do all of the following: - Set Foxtel Digital "Video Output" option to "RGB" - Set the Panasonic panel 15 Pin D-Sub input to "MINI D-SUB 15PIN (RGB)" - Buy a 21Pin Scart to 15 Pin D-Sub cable (eg. Scart to 15Pin HD) - Enjoy high quality foxtel signal! Can anyone suggest whether or not this would work?? Supposedly the TV accepts RGB, but is this the same RGB signal that Foxtel DC420NF outputs?? How confusing!!! Excerpt from the User Manual: http://www.goupload.info/download.php?file...34682d405390d73
st3v3 Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 Hi,I've bought a commercial Panasonic 42" HD Plasma TH-42PHD8WK. Inputs i have available are as follows: Composite S-Video 15-Pin D-Sub etc etc... - Enjoy high quality foxtel signal! etc etc.... Unfortunately, you won't really get a high quality fox signal, as they don't broadcast with any decent bitrates. I can't comment on whether the VGA signal would work, but it would definitely be cheaper to stick with composite or s-video, and save the 15-pin D-sub for something HD, like a HTPC or Xbox etc... st3v3
mtv Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 There are a few variations of RGB, especially how the sync pulses are encoded, so you would need to ensure they matched your screen and the Foxtel box. If you have component available on both the box & the screen, that would be my choice. With Foxtel, it's possible S-Video may provide PQ equal to component or RGB. Different combinations of screens & boxes produce different results. As mentioned, Foxtel birates aren't too flash, so don't expect the quality you get from FTA digital.
Primordial Posted April 23, 2007 Author Posted April 23, 2007 Thanks for the replies guys. I ended up going for SCART ---> Component (3xRCA) ---> Component (15Pin D-Sub) ---> Plasma. I got a 3 x RCA to 15 Pin D-Sub cable from Selby Acoustics which works a treat Comparing component to composite - a very big jump in quality. Much less jagged lines, better colour representation and sharper images. I never realised that the difference would be so noticeable! Cheers.
Guest paul_h Posted April 28, 2007 Posted April 28, 2007 (edited) Bumping this thread A friend just called me and asked to help hook up his new system. All I know is his foxtel box has scart out and his new LCD TV doesn't. I've never seen a foxtel box or his new TV yet. Is there audio output on the foxtel scart? Is it better to get the jaycar scart to 5 rca adapter (rgb + rca sound)? Is is there another output for sound from the foxtel box so I should get a scart to component adapter and another output and cable for sound? edit: nevermind i saw the sticky Edited April 28, 2007 by paul_h
ViVa Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 Hi, got a Scart to RGB from Good Guys, the PQ improved only just from the usual Red, White and Yellow cables used earlier! The resolution displayed is just 578i on my 1080p SXRD. It's pathetic; does anyone know how to get a better PQ?? Would love to see 1080i...
cyril Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 Foxtel is SD hence the 576i report, it is not HD. Foxtel will be doing HD latter next year, you will need a new STU to receive it. Cyril

I suspect it is the 'CREST' component cable that is the problem. Does anyone else get this effect? Anyone having a better cable that I should consider!?
cyril Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 The problem is the digital processing in the Sony is reacting to the motion related artifacts that result from the low bit rates that Foxtel use on some channels. Check out what digital processing options in the Sony can be turned off or down, reduce the sharpness. I very much doubt the cable is the problem, a couple of meters of mediocre video cable are unlikely to be the issue. Just downloaded the manual, things to try: Noise Reduction, off or BNR mode. Reduce sharpness. DRC mode 2 or off, Under Advance Setting try moving toward clarity and away from reality???? Cyril

Thanks try calling Foxtel and see if you can get a free upgrade to IQ. they are handing out free IQ at the moment so it's worth a shot. if you ask nicely you might be able to request an IQ1.5, which has HDMI output. perhaps not quite what you were looking for, but may provide a working solution, and the ability to record as a bonus
