Hi,

Checked the sets in Sony cetral Melb today, and observed that the shadow detail on the V series was markedly better than the X models. detail could be seen in darker / shadowed areas on the V that could not be made out on the X. Even the older S series sets showed the same effect of better shadow detail than any size X model. This was running the sony HD demo.

This was consistent on several different sets of both types.

I had the guy check the settings both were the same on each model - backlight MAX, Contrast and brightness both MAX on all. Sales guy tells me he's never noticed it before which I thought hard to believe because it seemed obvious to me. Also had him stick on a regular dvd (star wars ep 4) and while looking like an old home recorded VHS tape on all of them, the differences in contrast still there.

has anyone else any opionion on this?, to me this is a show stopper for paying the extra for the X series. I would'nt expect that one would be running Bl and everything on MAX @ home, all the sets were washed out and overbright.

Also what is the effect of reducing the backlight level.. does this make the shadow detail better or worse? I would think worse from CRT experience where cranking up the contrast does improve black detail at the expense of a washed out image but this may not apply with digital TV's. I know the consensus in the bravia threads is that the default settings suck

thanks in advance

If you would like to get an idea of how a Bravia X really looks, go back into the store and change these settings.

Contrast 80

Brightness 60

Colour 50

Sharpness 25

Backlight 2 or 3

gama low

These adjustments are just approx values, but will definatley fix up the PQ from the factory Vivid settings
