Strathfield has Digicrystle PVR with 160GB hard drive for $269-

I have the old Digicrystle 9000 PVR 80 GB hard drive and I’ve been happy with it !

My family think I’m the whiz kid (if you can refer to a retired person as a kid :D ) of electronics and computers

They don’t know I rely on DTV forum, whirlpool etc for my expertise

My brother in Cairns is keen on a PVR to replace the old VCR he’ll more or less buy whatever I recommend

That’s why I’m asking the knowledgeable people on this forum for advice !

I don’t want to lead him astray !

If not the Digicrystle PVR from Strathfield what alternatives would you recommend ?

What model are you talking about? 9077 or a different one???

Sorry, It doesn't say in Strathfield's ad which model but I assume its the 9077

It does say 'twin tuner' and '160GB hard drive'

I bought this from Strathfield last week.

Watching recorded programs often plays back pixelated.

This happens across several TV's I try. Also isolated outlets etc so the PVR is only plugged in itself.

I took it back for an exchange.

Worked fine for a day, but same thing happens.

Playback is dodgy. The weird thing is when I watch live TV its all good.

Even when I watch the recorded program at fault, the sounds is OK - only playback is pixelated.

Could I have got 2 dodgy units? Has anyone had this problem or maybe I'm just that lucky?

I have tried formatting the HDD. The weird thing is, I went back to the sh*tty programs and today they look fine.

So i dont know. Does this unit need 10-15 mins to warm up or something ???

Are you sure your brother can get digital reception where he lives? www.dba.org.au has a postcode search that's tels you what channels are available in his area. If you're not too demanding on how much you record the something like the digicrystal should be fine. Have you read the PVR FAQ? You could spend $200 more and get something like the mediastar or Toppy 4400 if you wished.

Thanks for the reply and the link Peter,

My brother lives in Cairns (Kewarra Beach area) and, according to the map, can get reception to all channels

I’m going with your suggestion of the Toppy 4400

I’ve had trouble finding a Mediastar 920 in Brisbane for myself so I doubt if they are available in Cairns

Even the Humax Smart (That ‘Tassie Devil’ is so happy with) is hard to locate in Brisbane

For that reason I’m intending to buy a Toppy 5000 for myself, is there still a ‘Best price for Toppy’ thread on the forum

Both my brother and I are not keen on buying on-line !

Regards

John
