ShadySoldier Posted April 16, 2007 Posted April 16, 2007 just wondering wat the footy is like in 5.1 surround sound. i imagine it'd be an good experience. Do channel 10 have microphones situated all around the ground to get the surround sound or what??
LBM Posted April 16, 2007 Posted April 16, 2007 As per the other thread in the HD section, they don't offer 5.1 yet but will in a few weeks.
Sambo90 Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 Yep, I recall reading a post from an email reply from TEN. It stated that Round 6 they hoped to be ready for 5.1. You can't really complain with that picture though.

minchjp Posted May 14, 2007 Posted May 14, 2007 I can't wait, unplug the centre speaker, and no more robert walls.
keiron Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 I can't wait, unplug the centre speaker, and no more robert walls. DD5.1 isn't a discrete audio format, so there will be some leakage of Wallsy into the other speaker channels even if you unplug the centre speaker.

Err, sorry, but Dolby Digital 5.1 very much IS a discrete audio format. The leakage you're hearing is your receiver's bass management at work. Set all your speakers to "large" and no more leakage. There is ZERO crosstalk between channels with DD5.1.

My apologies...I always thought DD was matrixed and DTS was discrete, which is why it uses double the space on a DVD.
Neon Kitten Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 My apologies...I always thought DD was matrixed It's Dolby Surround (known in its early cinema incarnation as Dolby Stereo, now mistakenly referred to by many as "Pro Logic", a term that has nothing to do with the encoding format) that is matrixed; Dolby Digital EX also uses a matrix to encode an extra rear channel but is otherwise discrete. Matrixed Dolby Surround can be and frequently is broadcast on digital TV and heard on DVDs, carried in a 2-channel Dolby Digital stream with an optional "Dolby Surround" flag to switch your decoder to the correct mode automagically. and DTS was discrete, which is why it uses double the space on a DVD. DTS is arguably a less efficient compression method, though part of the reason for the higher bitrate is increased sound quality (though in reality, the vast majority of people cannot tell the difference )

There was DD5.1 sound on TEN's Saturday night match, but it dropped out just before the end of the first quarter and didn't return. Maybe it was just a test-firing?

Maybe it was just a test-firing? 5.1 dropped out at the end of second quater in Perth. It did sound awesome while it lasted though. I also had a quick peek at the SD transmission. Absolute shite. Perhaps they realised this and had to up the SD bit rate.. I also note on foxtel games with 'active' that you can select between commentators, crowd, umpires or all audio.

Yeah it did sound good. I didn't see the SD version, perhaps TEN should serve up MPEG mono only on the SD channel instead of downgrading the HD channel's sound?
anthonysimilion Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 Yeah it did sound good. I didn't see the SD version, perhaps TEN should serve up MPEG mono only on the SD channel instead of downgrading the HD channel's sound? TEN isn't downgrading the HD audio at all - it stays at a constant 448kbps (the bitrate doesn't change if it is DD2.0 or DD5.1). I'm sure mono audio wouldn't go down well. As I said in the other thread, about AFL HD, another (probably unintended) benefit of DD5.1 is if you turn off the centre channel on your DD5.1 setup - you just have the crowd sounds only, no commentators! More like being actually at the game.
keiron Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 I'm sure mono audio wouldn't go down well. Ok, mono is a bit rough I suppose... But TEN's SD channel could have more bandwidth for video if it wasn't carrying both DD2.0 and MPEG audio tracks.

anthonysimilion Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 TEN isn't going to do that - they've invested all this money to get their HD broadcast to be the 'premium' broadcast - they're going to do everything they can to get the HD viewership up, including giving them better video and audio quality.
