Dvi/hdmi

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

OK so in determining what cables to run to my Z5, I've decided pretty much that just one hdmi cable will be sufficient as I will be using a PS3 and a computer with either DVI or VGA outputs.

I understand that there are DVI to HDMI and DVI to VGA convertors out there. My question is if I use these convertors will the PQ be affected in any way? I don't quite understand all the upscaling issues some are encountering.. if i set my computer to output 1280x720 to the projector shouldn't the picture if transmitted through DVI be pretty much spot on with HDMI sources?

Sorry for the noob question

DVI to HDMI is straightforward as it is still a digital type of connection. I installed a HDMI cable and then just grabbed a DVI-HDMI converter to plug into the computer and this works exactly as you expect. I don't recommend getting a DVI-HDMI cable (hard wired type), as computers are available with HDMI outputs now, and DVI might actually get made redundant in years to come.

However, VGA to HDMI is a lot more complicated and probably won't look that good as you are going from an analogue output and converting it to digital. I'm not even sure if there are devices that can do this, but it will be an add-on box between the PC and the Projector.

It's interesting that the Pioneer 50MXE20 commercial plasma only has DVI as standard and not HDMI (whereas the Pio 507 does have HDMI). All I've talked to, assure me that that is not an issue in that HDMI plugs straight into the the DVI with no issues.

As to VGA to DVI, I'm less confident but it does not seem to be an issue with PCs.

I think what you're thinking of is HDMI to DVI-D and VGA to DVI-A, Is that right?

DVI can be configured to do either analogue only, digital only, or both, DVI-D is Digital only, DVI-A is Analogue only, DVI-I does both, but the other problem VGA is only analogue and HDMI is only Digital, so somewhere it'll have to be converted from analogue to Digital.

It does. I have installed probably hundreds of 50MXE 10's and 20's and the DVI connector is fully compatible with HDMI. IMO its a better connector as it doesnt fall out!

Thank's guys, looks like I'll stick with a HDMI cable and wall plate to projector, and just use the DVI out on video cards... The lappy does not have a DVI out but apparently you can buy an attachment that will allow this. I think in the end everything will be running on HDMI so it's a pretty save bet..

I'm sooooooooooooooooo close!!

Do it.

The MXE20 is a ball tearer of a plasma - its better than the PDP5000 1080 panel by a LONG way and its a LOT cheaper. Plus it calibrates with perfectly accurate color and its grey scale tracking is 2nd to none.

hi guys,

been reading this with interest, as I just yesterday bought an LG 5402P PVR which has HDMI out, but my 18 month old Sharp 37 inch has a DVI-I connection. I was using the LST-5100P before which has the DVI, but the 5402P doesn't have DVI.

1st question: Can I connect from LG to Sharp using a HDMI to DVI cable? I'm having to use composite connection now for video and rca for audio.

2nd question: if I do this, what happens with audio? DVI connection required 3.5mm jack connection for sound as DVI is purely video - how does this work with hdmi cable which can do audio? Do I have to do what I was doing with the 5100P and connect RCA to the 3.5mm jack via a plug that did the 2RCA to 3.5? As an alternative can I do digital audio out from LG to digital audio in on Sharp? (need to confirm if sharp has digital audio in)

Thanks.

alexnat,

Yes you can use a HDMI-DVI-I cable or HDMI cable and DVI adapter at the Sharp end.

This won't make any difference to the Audio output, as long as you make sure you tell the LG which output to use. You can leave the RCA cables in place. Even if the Sharp accepts a digital audio input, you probably won't notice a difference just from the TV speakers.
