bladerunner_97 Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 Hi all, I'm considering the group buy of Toshiba HD-XE1 and in order to do so, would need to know how much my Denon 2800 would be worth, as I'd be selling that to help pay for it, as I won't be needing it if I had the Toshiba. Any ideas? It's in great condition, had it since middle of 2003...has two slight scratches on top of the unit (from cramming it into the slot of my old samsung rear projection TV...the bottom compartment)..although this isn't really relevant, not affecting playback, and who looks at the top of their dvd players anyway? It's only the face you see (just thought I'd mention it anyway). Thanks, please post any ideas as I'd like to know before the deadline for the group buy (of tomorrow night), I don't need it sold by then, but just an idea, and then I'll sell on these forums if there's a decent offer. Thanks again!
50mxe20 Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 <50% of the current street price would be a guess.
50mxe20 Posted April 16, 2007 Posted April 16, 2007 I would think due to age 1/3 of of street price may be more applicableYes. I was trying to be kind. Four years in HT gear is quite old isn't it.Two years in PC's is old.
laurie Posted April 16, 2007 Posted April 16, 2007 Great machine still got mine the first Denon with progressive scan I think you are better of keeping it for what you will receive for it assuming you do sell it good luck cheers laurie
Cody Posted April 16, 2007 Posted April 16, 2007 ^^ agreed, better off keeping it. if nothing else, use it to play your DVD-A's (which the Toshi wont do).
bladerunner_97 Posted April 16, 2007 Author Posted April 16, 2007 ^^ agreed, better off keeping it. if nothing else, use it to play your DVD-A's (which the Toshi wont do). Does this one play DVD-A? I thought it only did SCD? ...so no price figures tho? I noticed this on ebay: Denon 2900 so, maybe I could expect a little less than this one? Thanks for the help thus far. If possible, I'd appreciate a round about figure...because I really wouldn't have much use for a second DVD player...and I'd hope that the Toshiba could be firmware updated to play DVD-A...as the conspiracy theorists out there noticed that the panel on the front had lights reading "DVD-A"...so I'm guessing there's a chance that it could support it. Thanks again.

I think what a waste it would be to get rid of it. in a way glad my tosh HD-DVD is not region free on dvd. have also wondered myself what someone would offer me for it. given the gorgeous mint condition thing it is.
50mxe20 Posted April 16, 2007 Posted April 16, 2007 Based on this post a new Denon 2900 can be had for $1000, so 1/3 of that is only $333. I'd keep it if it were moi.
bladerunner_97 Posted April 16, 2007 Author Posted April 16, 2007 I hear what everyone is saying, that I should keep it, but I only have one setup, and there is no use in me keeping it, as the Toshiba will do everything it does and more (I'm fairly sure the 2900 does the DVD-A, and not the 2800). So I guess I should ask for offers around now... Also, the reason I'd like to sell is cause I'm a student and so could do with the money, especially if I'm buying a $1000+ unit! So any takers? Edit: I reserve the right to withdraw, yada yada...I'm just testing the grounds at the moment..I'm still not 100%..gotta decide if it'll ultimately be worth it (selling and buying the Toshiba...) sorry in advance for my indecisiveness

Thanks again. i assumed it would, as all the denons ive seen support both DVD-A and SACD, but i just checked and indeed it doesnt. my bad. highlights just how long 4ys in the HT world! ive no doubt Toshi could "switch on" DVD-A in the HD's, however as someone else pointed out in another thread on the subject, the issue is more likely to do with licencing fees for DVD-A. i'd love it if they added into a f/w update, but can you see them going to the effort and expense of adding support in for a format that is all but dead?
Cody Posted April 16, 2007 Posted April 16, 2007 FFFFFar out, is anyone else having major problems with this forum today?

Sorry, don't know how we switched from 2800 to 2900.

I paid a lot more for mine and that was when it was on run out. for that sort of money yep I'd keep it for what it is. in regards the 2800, I'd actually ask what it is your updating too and whether the loss in selling and buying a new player is justified given if there infact any improvements to be gained with going with a later player.

Thanks for the replies, they are helpful. I'd be going with bigblue's group buy, the Toshiba XE-1 HD-DVD player..so that's a step up I think, with the progressive scan, and upscaling etc...as well as HD-DVD playback. So with that in mind...I don't think it's worth keeping the 2800...even for normal DVD playback, as the Toshiba is better in every aspect. Is this the right spot to be posting the sale of this player in these forums? maybe somewhere else is better? I'm not sure, as there doesn't seem to be a dedicated spot for the sale of equipment here.

From what it seems the guys on the forum havent really answered your question on value, but in a way, they sort of have... they are saying for 300-400 bucks they would rather hang onto theirs... there you go, 300-400 is what they think you would get for it. Hope this helps Cheers Harry

Hope this helps Cheers Harry actually no. it means we wouldnt sell one for the price. Regardless if determined to sell, its the people in the market for one that will determine what theyre willing to pay. up ot the owner then if theyre willign to let go for the money or not. blade runner re improvments PQ wise over the 2800 for DVD, couple of things to keep in mind, upscaling and certainly with the comparisons I have doesnt necessarily much if any improvment wise. progreesive scan, doesnt the 2800 do that already. what i am sayign dont be suprised if you dont get a massive improvment picture wise. one other one the XE1 is not region free on DVD so if you have or watch dvds from other regions it will not play them as the 2800 would. All that said thats not to say going from the 2800 to the XE1 for dvd playback is a bad step. jsut dont get your hopes up for any miracles. without question though the XE1 will be a quantam lepa up from any DVD player if comparing with HD-DVD thats where it really wins.

bladerunner_97 Posted April 19, 2007 Author Posted April 19, 2007 Anyone interested in making an offer for my Denon 2800? Otherwise I guess I'll hold off on the group buy for the XE-1, and get a HD-DVD player when they come down in price. Thanks.
