george#3 Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 anybody ever asked any tech question in a jb-hifi store? most of the workers don't have a clue, was speaking to 1 of the sales guys today, and asked him when does he think the 100hz lcd range will be in, he said they have been out for a long time, theyall lcd's are a 100hz. just shows you who's out there, working in this job
quijibo Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 What do you expect? It's a large chain thats about volume selling. As if all their staff are going to be highly knowledgeable. If you want expert opinions go to a specialty store.
george#3 Posted April 15, 2007 Author Posted April 15, 2007 so you mean you expect to walk into any store be it jb-hifi or rebel sports and ask a simple question like this you mean this ok bye you! c'mon this is basic, everybody nows all the lcd panels only run at 50/60hz same as 1080i is not 1080p,even though they had a hitachi plasma there saying full hd 1080i,evey body nows 1080i is not full hd,it's only 720p, if you are going to sell something you should at least now what your are selling, other wise you get people going in there and being told a load of bullshit, then come home turn on there pc and come on this forum and spin a load of ****.which they have just been told

LCD panels run at whatever rate they are designed to run at, consumer LCD TVs will typically be designed to run at 50/60Hz, LCD Tvs based on computer monitors (generally smaller sizes) can have a wider range of operating frequencies determined by the onboard electronics. 1080i is not 1080p, true, it's 1080i 720p is 720p and a vaild HD resolution HD, True HD and Full HD are often abused terms in the marketing world. 1080p = 1920x1080 pixels refreshed as a full screen image 1080i = 1920x1080 pixels refresehed as alternating 1920x540 (odd & even) images at twice the rate of 1080p 720p = 1280x720 pixels refreshed as a full screen image All are valid and recognised HD image standards other wise you get people going in there and being told a load of bullshit, then come home turn on there pc and come on this forum and spin a load of ****.which they have just been told So true, so true...... If you want good advice, do your research! If you want cheap prices, go to JB and be well informed and know what you're after and what it's worth.

george#3 Posted April 15, 2007 Author Posted April 15, 2007 i know toshiba is bringing out 100hz and ang fuji, that's right fuji is bringing out a 120hz lcd TV. i now sharp allready has 1 on the market, just we nnever got it here in oz, i believe sony also as well as samsung,as you know sheep syndrome,or mokey see monkey dooo as for FULL HD in plasma, well hitachi don't make 1 yet as far as i am aware, only panasonic 65" pioneer 50"
diesel Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 Most JB's I've been to are only good for cheap prices - not advice, or knowledge in my experience. I suppose to keep prices down they employ alot of casuals/uni students and not some 40+ year old who's been into AV for many years with experience and higher wage bracket. This is what your specialist hifi stores are good at - good service and good product knowledge - they have to so they can differentiate from the volume sellers. As with any product/service...you get what you pay for.

They market them as Full HD, but are still only 1.3 million pixels or so, not 2million pixels like a real Full HD such as X Series.

(in his opinion) Wouldn't you walk in wanting a certain size range, with a budget in mind, and judge the tvs on their respective quality and features? People who ask when Laser, OLED or SED are coming aren't going to buy tvs that day, and therefore doesn'y pay his commission. From the sounds of it, these JB guys aren't planning on staying around for years. It's funny, you can't offer 100% service and rock bottom, discount prices. So if you want service, go somewhere where they offer it, but expect to pay a little more for the service.
nis200979 Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 you don't happen to work for JB do you No, and I don't think much of JB or Hitachi plasmas.
AlexMJ Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 If you reckon they're bad, go into a Good Guys asking technical questions
quijibo Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 Actually I was in the good guys yesterday, as the wife was after a vacuum cleaner, and when we inquired about the dyson models we got a 15 minute spiel and the guy was keen to do a demo. They must make good money on those.

stahc Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 whats the point..........did you want a tv or just cause trouble
ummester Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 If you reckon they're bad, go into a Good Guys asking technical questions At least the good guys staff, in my experience, have been honest enough to admit when they don't know something. Sales staff are like any group of employees, there are those who are good at thier jobs (sell a lot of stuff), those who are suited to or enjoy thier jobs (in this case know about the product) and those who just suck. The starter of this thread either got the last kind or possibly the first.
nis200979 Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 but as you allready now,i don't why i'm telling, because you now it ALL and heres another education on hd standards pal v's inter why 1080i is not full hd,good viewing arcam telling you about what hd really means(pro&inter) So whats your point in regards to Full HD?? I presumed they where telling you that the Hitachi plasmas (like Philips 42PF9631D) where full HD, when they are in fact 1280or1024x1080i. But that doesn't seem to be your point, so what is it? But the more I read from you the less I understand.
bac Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 and heres another education on hd standards pal v's inter why 1080i is not full hd,good viewingarcam telling you about what hd really means(pro&inter) Not sure what you're getting at when you're talking about "full HD". As mentioned above, 1080i is just as much a valid HD resolution as 720p or 1080p. Depending on the type of content and the frame rate, 1080i may provide just as good an image as 1080p and significantly better than 720p - a movie digitised at 1920x1080 pixels per frame @24fps is a good example. Cheers, BAC
genkifd Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 went to HN highpoint today asked they guy the about the rear projection tv doing full hd (sxrd) he insisted HD ready not Full HD - and then commented without the HDSTB its not 1080p - then has asks how much are you getting quoted --- tells me just goto JB cause he couldnt be stuffed.... lost his sale - and i dont care anyhow cause i live in the otherside of the city
Guest Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 JB serve their purpose, and thats to move out lots of boxes at marginal unit profits. They arent the place to spend 1/2 the day using up a salemans time they would rather you do your shopping around elsewhere, decide what you want THEN come into the store and go I want one of them.. best price. Thanks.
AndrewWilliams Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 If you want expert opinions, you're in just about the best place - the internet. Sure, there's lots of idiots on forums but somehow the truth seems to make its way to the surface. If you're wanting to see someone make a fool of themselves, talk to a really good looking teenager at a megastore - he probably spends his free time chasing chicks rather than educating himself on technology.
Guest Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 I was in a JB the other day, and observed a couple choosing a new TV. The woman stood 2 feet in front of a 50" Pio which was showing Ch7 demo loop. She looked at it for 3 seconds then said "this ones crap" and then looked over to the LCD's which were wall mounted and much further away. The salesman tried probing for their viewing habits, seating position and tried to offer some advice on contrast / blacks on the LCD's vs plasma. She responded - but this ones all fuzzy (50" plas @ -2 feet) the LCD is much better (4-5 m away). LOOK at the COLOUR ITS SO BRIGHT !! Resigned, the salesguy tried to offer some benefits of the various LCD models, but the woman was shopping for the tv with the nicest cabinet, pic quality was not much of a factor. the bloke appeared to have no say, he liked the Sony V series, but his lady didnt like the frame so they bought a glossy black one. LG I think. Point is these guys in the chain stores have to deal with muppets like this all day. I acutally think he tried to get them the right tv, but was defeated by fashion over function.
digitalj Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 I used JB HI-FI at Chatswood to work out if my first HDMI cable was faulty, and it was confirmed, as their HDMI cable worked, then as soon as they put mine in place there was no picture, so I left the store and returned the product back to where I got and the replacement worked at my place. I found the customer service to that respect was good.
