BribieG Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 OOps sorry, wrong mouse click and had put this in the SD topic. Embarrassment. My LCD screens ( TV, desktop pc and laptop) are gathering bug spots and general smears and need cleaning. I usually dust with a soft cotton T Shirt but a full clean is now required and I'm terrified of using anything that could junk my 3k TV, not to mention the computer screens ( I remember that back in the days of early LCD laptops, water was totally forbidden and alcohol was recommended), so what do you use? Water Windex Alcohol (Isocol)? I know a spray cleaner is available for n dollars where n is a large number but would like something cheap and effective!

I have been using KLEAR SCREEN High Definition Screen Cleaning Kit for the past 9 months and the bottle is still 3/4 full. It's awesome on my Plasma & LCD monitor. It may seem expensive but is very frugal when used correctly. http://www.softconnect.com.au/osCommerce/p...ad55ef320c98d81
jfbari Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 Been using Monster Screen Clean along with a Microfibre cloth. This product was thrown in as part of my purchase deal but they do a fantastic job and I highly recommend. Also, the cleaning solution is Non-alcohol based. Safe to use both Plasma and LCD screens.
fawlty99 Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 Mix Isopropyl alcohol and distilled or rain water in equal parts (50/50) inside an empty spray bottle. Tap water will leave white smears on your screen after cleaning it up because of the dissolved minerals. Dampen a piece of soft cloth (e.g. cotton) with your cleaning mixture and then wipe the display gently from top to bottom. Don't spray liquid directly onto the LCD.

So diluted alcohol is OK to use then. Thanks for the info, as I'd been intending to ask the same question As Bribie. I've always used a 'puff' of meths or lens-cleaner with a soft cloth or tissue on my CRT's, with excellent results, but, like Bribie, I wasn't game to try it on my LCD display in case of of adverse reaction. Lens-cleaner instructions say "Safe for all plastic & multi-coated eyewear lenses, camera lenses, computer screens..etc" but manufacturer instructions for LCD say "Use a soft moist cloth. Do not use aerosol or liquid cleaners." Hadn't realised that Plasma/LCD screen cleaners were available, so I'll get something next time I'm shopping.

Thanks fawlty, isopropyl alcohol is sold as Isocol, if it's still available!! Will try your method, don't feel like spending 60 dollars on something you can cook up yourself for 10 bucks!!
complectus Posted April 16, 2007 Posted April 16, 2007 Don't use windex... http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/04/10/windex-1-hdtv-0/
BribieG Posted April 16, 2007 Author Posted April 16, 2007 That's exactly the kind of thing I was worried about!!!

spacecowboy Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 Magi Kleen At Bing Lee, comes with cloth and spray, excellent results.
Greebs Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 I personally use some hot soapy (washing up liquid) water and a soft cloth - my 3-4 year old laptop certainly hasn't degraded because of it.
strange_one Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 I think the best advice is to not touch it at all unless it really needs a clean. You'll find that a good majority of cleaners that claim 'no streaks or residue' still leave behind a milky residue on your screen. Even some of the microfibre cloths you can buy can put small scratches on the screen surface just with gentle wiping. The one cleaner I've heard nothing but good things about is the Monster one which is like an anti-static gel, but it costs a bundle, like $60-70 from what I remember. If there is just dust on the screen then give it a very light wipe with a dry microfibre cloth or even a feather duster should do the trick. If there are fingerprints and smears that are really bothering you then opt for one of the options posted in this thread but don't buy a cheapo cleaner pack because most of them are rubbish I've found. Unfortunately my LCD TV screen has residue and cleaning marks all over it not just from myself but when I've sent it in for repair (twice) a tech has obviously given it a wipe down with something. It'd have to get pretty dirty for me to notice when it's on though, my LCD PC screen is pretty bad if I look at it closely but I don't really notice when it's on
