Hi All,

I have to buy a new TV, my old one was destroyed in a thunderstorm a couple of weeks ago, the model is discontinued and the insurers have offered me a replacement. I have a budget of around $3000 to spend, I already have high quality component cables for everything so that is one less expense for me.

What I'm looking for is recommendations on best bang for buck, the last TV was a 52" LG DLP I picked up for $1800, I know LGs have a bad rep, but I don't buy on reputation and up until the storm the telly operated flawlessly with a fantastic picture from any digital source.

I plan to connect - Foxtel, HTPC, Wii60, sat. box & DVD recorder.

The insurance company is currently offering me the option of taking 1 of 2 models they have available from their supplier or getting my own quote for an equivalent unit, the units they have offered are the Sony KF55E200 ( http://www.sony.com.au/homecinema/homecine...p;term=kf55e200 ) - it's an LCD and I've stayed away from LCDs because of the dead pixel warranty conditions, the other is the LG DC1D ( http://au.lge.com/md/product/prodcategoryl...ctId=1100001037 ) this one is a DLP, same as my old LG.

So any recommendations, not just of what to buy but which units to avoid.

On a side note the storm also took out my ADSL modem, my hub, brand new Yamaha amp, Aslan Acoustics subwoofer, a set of 5.1 logitech speakers, 3 PCs, my wireless router & water heater, everything else has been settled and now the TV repairer has finally written off the telly after squeezing over a grand out of my insurers.

bu11dog,

for around that budget i would recommend looking at

1. Panasonic TH50PX600A

2. Hitachi 50PD960DTA

Both are quality panels, 50" so the size differnece will not be too noticeable.

It will really depend on size, i am assuming that you want to stick around the 50". Pioneer is going to be too expensive at that size, as you have mentioned LG are currently in product recall over some of their stuff so leave them alone. About the only other i could suggest would be a Samsung which would be cheaper than the above too at the expense of PQ.

Just out of curiosity regarding thunderstorm damage and insurance....do u need everything on a recommended power surge adapter or the insurance company covers u regardless?

I'm covered regardless, well the insurers (it's Allianz, they've been great) didn't ask us about any surge protectors. We have power boards with built in surge protection anyway, but the strike must have been pretty close to my house to cause so much damage and no surge protector could have prevented it.

I've also claimed for damaged equipment through the power company, not sure about Oz wide but in Sydney the electricity companies have their own insurance to cover things connected to the mains suffering damage through power surges. If you have a blackout and something dies then contact the power company, don't claim it on your home in surance unless it's storm/lightning damage.

The unscrupulos may be tempted to put faulty equipment away and wait for a blackout, shame on you.
