2by4 Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 Anyone out there running a Wii with a projector? Any recommendations for a replacement for the wired sensor bar? Is a DIY job easy enough or has anyone tried one of the 3rd-party ones out there? Ideally I'd prefer if someone sold a power adapter for the Nintendo sensor bar so I could use the one that came with the Wii and then just plug it into the wall. Also, anyone favour any of the 3rd-party component cables out there? Most of them seem to be designed for TVs because the audio L/R cables don't split very far from the video cables.

2by4 Posted April 13, 2007 Author Posted April 13, 2007 Yep, I am using the wii with my sony HS-60. No problems at all. I have the wii component cables. Are you using the sensor bar that comes with the Wii? I think it's too short to run from the back of the room to the front. Do you need to use extenders to run the audio from the Wii component cable to your amp?
Hydrology Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 I recently bought some good quality Wii component cables from play-asia for about $8. Havent hooked them up yet, but will do over the weekend and see how I go.

Hi 2by4, I built a Wii battey powered sensor bar for use with my projector. Just pick up four IR emitters from Jaycar, a switch and a battery holder for 4xAA batteries. Use a 12" piece of wood to mount the IR emitters on. Have two emitters 1" apart at each end and the two inside emitters 6" apart. It doesn't look pretty, but its works fine. I use it with my projector and it gives me a range of 5 metres. This isn't to shabby as the standard Wii sensor bar is only good to about 3.5metres. If the above isn't clear let me know an I'll post a picture of it. Regards, Stephen

Regards, Stephen Hi Guys, Here are a couple of photos. As I said above, it ain't pretty, but it only took 30 minutes to throw together and has a range of 5 metres. The JayCar part number is ZD1945 (5MM INFRARED TRANSMITTING LED). Home Made Wii Sensor Bar Top View Home Made Wii Sensor Bar Bottom View Regards, Stephen
2by4 Posted May 4, 2007 Author Posted May 4, 2007 Sorry to wake an old thread, but just to add a word... I ended up getting the $10 component cable from play-asia, it does the job fine (although I did have to run short extension leads for the audio as they only split about 10cm from the video cables). I chickened out in the end and picked up a 'Nextronics' sensor bar online. (IGN review - http://au.gear.ign.com/articles/764/764745p1.html) I can't say for whether it's more powerful than the Nintendo sensor bar. It ended up costing about $40 after shipping and getting a replacement adapter (they'll only ship you a US 110v adapter), so it's certainly not as cost-effective as making one yourself but it rated well in terms of WAF. Thanks to everyone for their help, especially Stephen for posting those pics. - 2by4
Hydrology Posted May 5, 2007 Posted May 5, 2007 Ive now since hooked up the Wii to my AX100 PJ, and the results are expected - fun, but we are talking SD resolutions here. However the sensor bar works fine, and I am generally no closer than 3.5 metres away.
sulimo Posted May 5, 2007 Posted May 5, 2007 Not really related, but how does the Wii look blown up on a big screen like that?
Hydrology Posted May 5, 2007 Posted May 5, 2007 Not really related, but how does the Wii look blown up on a big screen like that? Well obvioulsy being spoiled by content from HD-DVD/BR/PS3 and 360, its never gonna compare, but Im happy enough with how it looks. Its how it plays thats important tho' and it plays great!!!

Looks OKish on a small CRT set, but blow it up at all (even on my lowly 32" LCD) and it looks bloody awful. I had nightmarish visions of it being blown up big time on a projector.

tomohawk Posted May 5, 2007 Posted May 5, 2007 Nothing looks as bad as Foxtel! I actually prefer the picture quality of my panel when it is switched off as compared to when it is showing foxtel.
