Guest daved Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Hi Struggo I have had one of these for about 2 months. I am very happy with it, the PQ is v good. I was considering the 9731 (1080) but in the end decided that the picture on the 9531 was as good on 90% of viewing. Just when I had decided to buy the 9531 they discontinued it and brought in the 9631, which is exactly the same, only with a HD tuner, so I bought it. Good Luck :

Try to search in google.co.uk. you'll find quite a few of reviews of this model, infact I've just purchased the 37pf9631 today at Myers after comparing the philips with Sharp, Sony V series, Samsung and LG. Bought it for $2050 delivered with an extra 2 years warranty. Could've gotten $1900 delivered without the warranty....Not sure if thats the cheapest around but I reckon the price wasn't not too bad. for 37"

Price was $1950 from Hardly Normal (1 year warranty). It was refund money I got back from DSE Power House after spending much time frigging around trying to get a replacement Acer AT3705-MGW (channel dropping and turning back on after hours on standby (read the 77 page forum for more details)). This was finally replaced with a Sharp LC37BD6X which had some noticable backlight leakage prob's, so I took it back for a replacement and the last one they had in stock was worse.... . (Top marks though for the DSE 14 day money back guarantee..no problems there...I just managed to stretch it out a little longer.... ) Anyway, for anyone still interested the Philips has excellent PQ, good tuner (even in my forgotten corner of the central coast), reasonable range of inputs /outputs and it is now wall mounted so I can finally sit back and enjoy the show - with ambilight (thought it would be a bit of a joke but is actually quite good and very noticable when switched off....) Hope that helps someone....

Struggo Posted May 13, 2007 Author Posted May 13, 2007 Hi All, I decided to grab the 32pf9631d/79 (Built in tuner) as my rumpus room isn't the largest. http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/c...RCSHQVHKFSESI5P http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=409341 I picked it up for $1750 & $190 for extended warranty from Domayne on 32months interest free. Thx for the feedback. Just tweaking settings now. Very happy with my Philips LCD Cheers Struggo
Guest Nevskii Posted May 14, 2007 Posted May 14, 2007 Great news Nevskii,How does the tuner handle SD DTV? What wall mount did you use? I'm really keen on this set. Cheers Struggo Hey Struggo, Sorry for the delay but been away with work. No prob's with SDTV reception overall. Signal strength is mostly low (according to a STB in another room) and some channels go AWOL occasionally but the Philips is generally the last to drop. It is just my area and aerial. If you mean PQ, SDTV looks pretty good to me (much better than the Acer and easily on par with the Sharp but with much much better blacks). I am viewing from a distance of between 2.5m & 5m so I don't really think it would look too bad anyway. Is there something more specific you wanted me to check? (not that I want to uncover something I hadn't noticed... ) Hmmmm, yes, the wall bracket….that would be the 'universal' one I bought from ebay and had the Acer & the Sharp hanging from it before I got the ONLY TV on the market (probably) that comes with one in the box!! When I hung the Philips on it the wall plate was in the way of the scart connectors...so out came the hacksaw.....My missus just shakes her head and walks away… I didn't bother with the Philips one in the box as more holes in the wall were required. It looks very compact though so I would have used it for sure... Hope that helps... Cheers, Nevskii

Hopfully the info is useful to someone else... My brother was so impressed he is going out to get the 81cm version also. Enjoy!

I watched a HD demo with it alongside the new X series Bravia 40inch panel and the samsung's as well...Philips was much noticably better with the definition and details from 1.5m away. The Sony was lacking detail compared to the Philips and the Samsung seemed to be overdoing the picture processing and the image looked a little blurry compared to the other two..

I was hoping you would be able to post your settings so that I have a reference point. Also when panning the TV seems to be doing it fast compared to what I'm used to (I have an Hitachi 42" 8800 plasma & Panasonic 68cm TAU). Or does this seem so because the picture appears 3D at times or is it the DIGITAL MOTION CONTROL? I may use the wall bracket, do yo think it is a as good as the others? I have never wall mounted a TV before. Cheers Struggo

Will try and play with it a bit more (Wifey is due another bout of head shaking anyway... Like I mentioned I am up to 5m away so almost everything looks good to me (must find those glasses...) Anyway, I am running the following Picture settings: TV Settings -> Reset to Standard -> Vivid TV Settings -> Picture: Contrast = 82 Brightness = 45 Colour = 65 Hue = 0 (greyed out) Sharpness = 6 Tint = Cool Custom Tint (greyed out) Pixel Plus = on Digital Natural Motion = Off (just trying this as mentiond but not noticed much difference) Dynamic Contrast = Maximum DNR = Maximum MPEG AR = Off Colour Enhancement = Maximum Active Control = On Light Sensor = Off Picture Format = Auto (can be a bit of a pain at times so will play with this...) With the wall bracket it's definately a neat little unit but not quite as fexible as mine (especially now it has bits sawn off it ;-)). That is if you are mounting on a stud wall you need to ensure you get the screws into two wall studs and mine would have put the TV off centre. The Philips bracket has fixed mounting points for the TV so if the bracket is mounted to suit the studs it put the TV in the wrong place. The universal bracket allows a bit of flexibility as the mounting arms slide along the wall plate so you can mount the wall plate (plenty of mounting holes) and have the TV offset on it (a bit). Hopefully you have the studs close to the right place and the Philips bracket will work OK. Do a bit of measuring up and stud finding and it can all end up looking pretty good. I noticed there were a few wider mounting holes in the back of the TV (which may allow the sideways flexibility) but the screw threads are different from the factory mounting points so didn't go there. Hope I have explained that OK... Hope that helps....
ToeEdge Posted May 18, 2007 Posted May 18, 2007 Hi all, I am waiting delivery of my 37PF9631D now. One of the things that sold it to me is the USB. As part of the demo the rep showed me a video file running from a memory stick. So, I rushed home dumped the latest episode of Heroes to my flash drive and took it back down to give it a go. BupBow... can't handle DivX... bugger. Which leads me to my question... Does anybody stream video to theirs via the USB and if so what format are the files? Thanks.
botto Posted May 18, 2007 Posted May 18, 2007 Does anyone have the specs, price, arrival date on the Philips 1080p 40" plus LCDs? Hardly Normal, Bundall told me June, but had no other details... Have to say the 37" had considerably better detail and more life-like picture than the 40" Bravia X displaying Ten HD.
chris_vav Posted May 18, 2007 Posted May 18, 2007 I went to Harvey Norman yesterday to see what Phillips models they had. I could see 3 on the floor, but they were all the ones with build in digital tuners. I'm after the specific model :- 37pf9631d/79 But the salesman told me that was old stock, as all the new ones will now come with inbuilt digital tuner. Being a geek, i was after the one with the built in ethernet and multimedia capabilities. Perhaps i should give up on this model, and just by a a Phillips Streamium which does the same i beleive, and get a cheaper Phillips lcd model??? Anyone got any opinions on this?

Hey mate, I think the only supported formats are MPEG 1 & 2. For DivX I use PC via HDMI Just as an aside, I'll be checking out the warranty /repair process tomorrow as I have a rather nice 1 pixel width blue line from top to bottom in the middle of the screen on all inputs even menu's.....hmmmmm....

medianut Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 Hey guys, thinking about getting one of these screens (32PF9631D) but also noticed that it said the PC input was 1024x768 max and as I'll be running it from a media centre PC that seemed pretty low? Some of the other screens don't seem to mention it on the specs and I'm wondering whether they all have the same limitations.... The other screens I've been considering so far are the - Sony KDL32V2000 - Panasonic Viera TX-32LXD600A - Samsung LA32R81BD I can run it from the PC using VGA, DVI, S-Video... and I assume picture quality should be alright watching TV, videos, but I'd also like it pretty clear when viewing the desktop and settings etc.. Any thoughts... Cheers MediaNuT
Peterap Posted July 1, 2007 Posted July 1, 2007 Hi All,I thought I would post some pictures of my 32pf9631D in the Rumpus. http://profile.imageshack.us/user/Struggo/ Cheers Struggo Hi Struggo, Nice pictures! I was quite interested in the Philips 37PF9731/69, as it was 1920 X 1080P. The only shortcoming was that it didn't support 1080P only 1080I. When I enquired at Harvey Norman recently, they told me that this particular model was no longer available. Does anyone know if there is a new model on the way, please, perhaps with an inbuit HD tuner? I'm after a 37" full HD with speakers underneath. Does anyone know if one is available apart from the Acer one? I was quite impressed with the specs of the Hitachi, even though it isn't a full HD. Cheers, Peter P.

Hi Peter, Not sure if a new model is on the way ASAP, but I reckon it will be here sooner rather than later. I have read somewhere else that Hitachi's next range of Lcd's will be 1080p. Hang in there as they are just around the corner. The first link is the new Philips info from the UK. I'm in no hurry, so I'll just sit back and wait to see what happens. I am impressed with Hitachi products (we have three of their reverse cycle air conditioners installed at home). The powered swivel base on the Hitachi also appeals to me! A nice touch. Regards, Peter P.
