They lose a whole heap more money on the 20GB version, so it makes sense to kill it off. Only catch is that, psychologically at least, there's now a 50% price difference between the 360 Premium and the PS3...

Mind you, with UK sales down to 17k per week, the 60GB version-only strategy doesn't seem to be working either...

$100US for 40gb is a bargain or overpriced?

Not saying its a bargain when the price is that close most would go the 60G, hence their decision.

Its not just the memory that is the diff, wi fi etc...

wifi and card readers you will never use. I'd save the $100US. to put it in perspective it is a 25% increase for next to no return considering 60Gb is almost as useless as 20gb is you plan to use it as an entertainment hub. For that $100 US you could buy a 250gb drive and whack it in the machine.

I use them...

Well the wi fi anwyay, i cant use my SD card in my reader as it does not fit. Not sure if its a HK thing or what.

it's not a mini sd needing an adaptor is it?

I considered the wifi, but decided on the cable connection as I have found wifi to iffy. Prefer the reliablity and constant connection/speed of a physical cable.

Fair enough. I must admit mine has not missed a beat and with my setup with the PC in the study it works a treat.

The reader you mean? Maybe. Mines a standard SD card, that might be the reason. Have not got a mini so dont know the size exactly but that sounds possible.

when my mate who lives in Japan was coming for a visit back to Australia, I asked him if he could pick me up a PS3 ...

Anyhow he, said that the 60Gb models are hard to get, but it is possible.

The 20Gb models sell out as soon as they hit the shelves and are impossible to find.

Yeah sure there is no demand for the 20Gb model ...

Andrew.

The 20Gb version has a larger loss margin than the 60Gb. Is it really surprising they would drop it? Just be honest and say "this losses us a bucket so we are canning it" instead of trying to BS the situation.

Strange turn of events...

Maybe it also has something to do with consumer backlash over many countries not getting the budget option?, rather then cave into pressure and release the Basic elsewhere, just dump it and claim it's not selling?

Could be a cost thing as well, maybe they don't want demand for a model they are loosing more money on, although as I type this I remember the 360 Elite is coming out soon, maybe Sony know something we don't, and MS are looking to dump their base model?

No wait, I just had a more relevant thought, the Basic PS3 is what like $499?, the 360 Elite comes out this month at like $479, the Elite has HDMI 120gb hard drive and even comes with the cable, I get it now, Sony don't want to compete directly with that...

That's where I got mine, quick smart delivery, just pay with credit card, have your most recent statement scanned into the pc and as soon as you get the request for it, email it (don't fax it) and then after a couple of hours, call em and confirm they got it and your order can be released. Should have it in a few days. If you can, just order the console (games and accessories can hold it up).
