Hi all.

After waiting years for reliable HD-PVR I have had enough. I am going out to buy a SD box, probably today if I can find a good price. I am looking at the Topfield TF6000pvrt as it has component connectivity and now that my DVD player is about to be replaced with the new Toshiba HD-DVD player with HDMI output, I have spare component connection on my screen - other options with SCART are just too problematic.

I haven't seen any bad reports on the 6000 so I assume it pretty much the same settled technology as the Masterpiece, other than the addition of wireless LAN. Is this assumption reasonable? Is the 6000 a reliable box?

Also, if anyone has found the 6000 for a good price in Sydney could you pls let me know.

Regards,

Allan

Yep the technology in all the SD Toppy's is pretty much the same. 6000 are less numerous so another option is to buy a cheaper 5000 (or MP) and add a $200 ICEBOX2 (with 1 year of free 7 day EPG, wired and wireless options - www.icetv.com.au)

Have you read the AQA FAQ (pinned)?

Sony,Toshi, Topi7000 all use Broadcom processor. The processor drives all the main functions. The SD Topi's and Mediastars use NEC EMMA2 processor which has been proven to be stable.

For that resaon MS have stuck with NEC but introduced HDMI to thir new 9022. It's working on the same NEC platform as the Topi SD's with simular features. PQ via HDMI is awesome. The HDMI control menu let you set the resolution 576p 720p, 1080i, sharpness contrast, brightness and a few others.

Just to clarify here Redfim, we're talking about a SD PVR which upconverts SD (same as an upscaling DVD Player).

Actually quite a clever little device which keeps all the SD benefits and provides a quasi-HD performance. The specs are a little 'techish', but I'm assuming you can record two things at once (in different TPs) and do this via timer recording and watch a previous recording at the same time?

Price is not that bad either at $800 on the website and possibly less if you shop around.

I have just purchased one of these TF6000pvrt units and the wireless setup is full of bugs. However the one thing that I found with the unit is that although it allows you to select 64 bit WEP the unit will not connect up with it being used. This unit seems to only connect when 128 bit WEP is used.

I like the ICETV guide as it is a breeze for my ageing mother to select the programs she wants to record, this is a huge plus in my books.

My 80 year old mum seems to be getting her head around the twin tuners and how to drive the system to the max so again it gets a big tick from me.

Allan. Are you going to elaborate on why you've had enough??

Personally I've got a Toppy 5000 (SD) and Beyonwiz P1, and am extremely happy with both.

The only thing I wish the P1 had extra was a bigger EPG layout, such as PG's JustEPG TAP which brings EPG nirvana to the 5000. Other than that, the performance is superb.

I'm just thinking of the near future with increasing HD shows and multicasting, as to whether going SD might leave you with some regrets.

You obviously didn't notice that that post was from April last year, and at that time multi-channeling simply wasn't a concern that most people had when choosing equipment.

edit: spelling.

HD PVRS were relatively new back then and still fairly buggy and expensive. The long awaited Toppy 7000pvrt was a disappointment on launch and left many wondering if Topfield can't get it right (after Toshiba, Sony and LG) then what hope is there...??
