OK so I currently have a PoS Soniq 42" Plasma. Hoping to get it exchanged in the near future (another story!), which should net me about $2100-$2200. I purchased the Soniq last year + ext warranty that is why the amount is so high.

Now Im just not too sure what to get. I will be using it for mainly foxtel, plus xbox1 xbmc (xvid files), xbox360 in very near future, and I have an SD STB already. It will have to be around $2300 max. Not sure if I should get an LCD or another Plasma. It would have to be 40" min. if it was LCD as Im used to that size now.

In JB the guy recommended a Pioneer way out of my budget, then next in line was a Samsung plasma for around $2395 - not sure what model.

What would be best suitable for the devices Im going to use (from a technical point of view). I have a friend who insists on LCD because he doesnt like looking at the fly screen on the plasma. Where my plasma is situated at the moment it also gets a lot of glare during the day, so should I go LCD?

Will the 360 look better on plasma or lcd? And will it depend if the plasma is SD or HD? If the 360 has HDMI output I guess I would lean toward a tv with HDMI input as well.

Hopefully you wont whinge about this being another plasma vs lcd thread! Appreciate any feedback

cheers

Also there is a unit in the HN catalogue for < $2000 which is HD, any idea of the model?

It is a Panasonic TH-42PV60A

You can't go past a panda, I have one of these

VIERA TH-42PV60A 42inch Plasma TV - (HD) & it upscales SD very well, they only have a built in annaloge tunner. You will have to buy either a SD or a HD tunner to go with this tv to get the best out of it.

Also the

Viera TH-42PX600A 42 inch (106cm) Plasma HDTV , has build in HD tunner also a very good TV , these are going for about $2400

Both of these tv's will turn a SD signal (such as dvd) into a very good picture that is near HD.

I still get blown away sometimes at how good the PQ is & I,ve had mine for 4 months, also I mainly feed it a SD FTA signal.

Just my apinion though

Thanks for that. Looks like a damn good price for a HD panel.

What's the dif between these 2 models? Is it just the inbuilt HD tuner? I have an SD STB so not concerned about in-built tuners, especially considering i dont watch that much FTA tv.

AS far as I understand it is only the tunner & a SD card slot , Apart from that they are the same pannel. Oh sorry & a swiful stand.

Yes it is a damn good price for a HD panel.

I'm very very happy with mine :P:D:blink:

sounds like a winner as I dont need tuner, sd or swivel.

Just hope by the time I get one that they'll still be <$2000

I read somewhere that someone called a TH-42PV60A panel "semi-HD"?

this is correct, both of these panels are "semi HD", in that their native resolution is "only" 1024 x 768 which is not "true HD", that resolution would be 1920 x 1080.

this was taken from the Panasonic website:

"1080p Digital Re-mastering Processor - This processor up-converts a variety of video signals, such as those from analogue broadcasts and DVD movies, to provide a level of image quality rarely seen in SD Plasma TVs."

having said that, i think it would be wise to not get too hung up on this fact. read this thread: http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=16325 for viewing distance calculation. there is also another one floating around about how the eye cannot distinguish between 1080p/i after a certain distance.

As always it will come down to your personal preference, honestly you cannot go wrong with these as they are awesome screens

Sanitarium, say there is a plasma or LCD panel that's 1366x768 but can accept 1080p signal (I believe there is a model like that),

what do you call it .... 1080p or 1080i or what ?

Well I ended up getting the Panasonic TH-42PV60A

The manager that i spoke to at jb refused to exchange earlier in the week...so I went in on the weekend when he wasnt there and the sales people did it no problems!

Good unit so far

You'd call it a HD display, as it would correctly handle a 720p signal natively. It would downconvert 1080p. Easy!

Howdy.

Read this whole forum and I cant seem to read anything that i am experiencing  . Not sure if anyone out there with 8900 has experienced or is experiencing this problem...

Problem :D : Had mine 8900 for a good 6 months. When I change chanells I am left with a black ghost of the previous channel frame. Its not quiet image burn or retention as i think i understand it. It dissappears soon enough (as soon as a fresh image comes onto the screen) so realistaically it last for no longer than seconds. But jeez its annoying..

Any tips?

Secondly anyone got some settings that they are happy with? I have read alot but most peoples are under 100hrs. mines well over that.

Cheers.

Justo, please refer to the threads that allow you to increase your count above 10 and start a post of your own. Posting unrelated information in other peoples threads is a bit rude and worse not very likely to generate an answer.
