Hi Folks,

Not 100% sure if this is the correct forum for this post, apologies if not...

I currently live in a unit block where the existing sat equipment is not able to receive any of the FTA channels. I understand (sketchy information) that if the body corporate upgrade the gear, a couple of the FTA channels will then be available on my Fox IQ.

Now, before I start to lobby my landlord and body corp - can anyone give me some idea of what the cost of this work might be - we talking 100's, 1000's, 10,000's etc. etc. What's involved - just a new LNB?

I realise this isn't much to go on, but just interested to see if it's a lost cause or worth pursuing..

Thanks in advance.

Anthony,

For FTA channels, what is needed is a terrestrial antenna/distribution system, not satellite.

(unless you are in a known black-spot area the cannot receive terrestrial TV signals by any other means).

How are you currently receiving FTA channels?

You haven't said where you are.

It's impossible to advise costs without inspecting the current set-up to determine what's required.

The body-corporate needs to arrange an inspection and quotes.

Hi, there is a digital aerial already in place that I *now* finally use with a Wintal PVR (long story, but would rather not have had to get the extra box) - however, I was definitely informed by the Foxtel Engineer (not that reliable I guess) and I have seen elsewhere that, with dual band sat a couple of the FTA channels are re-transmitted over satellite...

I'm in the Sydney metro area.

You'll need both a dual LNB and cabling to your unit to get the re-transmitted ABC, ABC2 and Sydney's Channel 9, AFAIK they are transmitted on a vertical polarity, hence the need for a dual LNB, and forget about Chans 7 and 10 for the moment, they haven't yet agreed to pay for the transponder space on the Optus C1 satellite.

Foxtel have the resources to quote on MDU (multi dwelling unit) installs, give it a call but don't be surprised at the cost. Depending on the age of your building, and the consideration of the owners, it may be prohibitive to re-cable your units just to get FTA.

BTW you won't be able to receive FTA DVB-T and DVB-S satellite on the one box, the regional pay TV provider AUSTAR was supposed to bring one out last year....still waiting John!

wot's the background to this?

If the building already has a working terrestrial digital TV distribution system, I doubt they will be in a hurry to pay for an upgrade to the satellite system so you can watch FTA channels which are already available on the terrestrial system.

Of course, you could always ask.

Getting a Body Corporate to agree on anything more than replacing a light bulb is a challenge at the best of times......

I was told about a year ago that Foxtel was quoting about $1,900 to install a 4-wire satellite backbone in a 12-unit block, but required 100% subscription. Needless to say that this never happened....

Thanks for the responses folks - as I suspected, not really worth the hassle. It just annoyed the c^%p out of me moving from a unit with Fox IQ over cable to Fox IQ over sat that I lost all the FTA channels and thus the PVR functionality for FTA too. It required another box with ANOTHER remote etc. etc. - sure you all understand!

Foxtel are subsidising installs in blocks of units up to a certain size. Phone up foxtel at North Ryde and ask to speak to the Contractor Liaison Manager. He should be able to help you. If you have problems send me a pm and I'll see what I can do.

Cheers
