Couj Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 I'm currently planning to renovate my house and, sadly, the size of my house and my proposed renovation is going to make it very difficult to utilise my Kef Q7 floorstanders and my matching centre. So I'm looking at what in wall speakers I could buy that will give me a similar level of home theatre/music sound quality. Not sure on budget yet. But uber expensive (which for me is say $5,000 per speaker) is out of the question. Any one with any ideas?
Foggy Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 Have a look at the Focal In-wall fully boxed speakers. They used to be called the Cache LCR400. I have one and it is very good, although not cheap with an RRP of $2999. I'm not sure if the new replacement model is out yet, but it will have the famous Focal Beryllium Tweeters and an upgraded price tag to match. I get no reverberation in the bulk head because the speaker is fully enclosed. I know that foxy built his own boxes and dampened them to achieve a similar result with his beloved Earthquake speakers. His was definitely a more economical solution, but I think he uses them for mainly HT, rather than music listening. I would expect the Focals to be more refined and musical, but I can't say for sure as I haven't heard the Earthquakes. But if you mainly want them for HT use, then I would suggest that the Earthquakes are the more prudent option.
50mxe20 Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 Just to add. I have Focal in-ceiling speakers for my rears. A lesser model/range than Foggy's. Focal are definitely worth a look.
Foggy Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 Yes, you can find more information about them here.

The speakers are (USA) Earthquake's (and they are) Yes as mentioned 90% is for movies and music DVD's. The service and price from the supplier was 1st class. They are built like a brick dunny, come with template cutouts, have adjustable directional tweeters, very, very well made and strong. Can see ours under sig. below. Couj Posted April 11, 2007 Author Posted April 11, 2007 Thanks guys. Some good options to look into. Foxtail, any idea how the earthquakes stack up against the focals? I'd suggest that 80 % of their use will be for movies but I do like good music as well. Foxtail, was it a difficult job installing the earthquakes? Would you recommend it to a relative novice?
Couj Posted April 11, 2007 Author Posted April 11, 2007 Anyone know if a stockist in Melbourne that has the focal in wall range?
Foggy Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 Anyone know if a stockist in Melbourne that has the focal in wall range? E-Home in Carnegie sell them.

No idea how they stack up, I do know the Earthquake range are big in the US but not here only a few dealers, can't falt them myself. Very easy to instal, mark with template (away from beams), cut hole and slot in as they have dogs at the back with screws at the front, then just slip on the cover grills, easy. I did build some insulated boxes for the rears as I didn't want the ceiing to be a huge speaker and annoy the neighbours. Man I'm useless with tools but I did it. I purchsed these speakers sight unseen after reading some excellent reviews in the US, not the brightest thing to do but that's me, I did the same with the Harmony 880, Epson TW600 PJ and the 100" motorised Cinescreen, it all worked out great IMO (as can be seen for all those on these forums that purchased after me).
marcusd1503561159 Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 Why not try some KEF inwalls, check out the Ci series at kef.co.uk. They have them in varying price ranges and would voice match your Q7s. Also check out Sonance Virtuoso or Symphony Series inwalls. Virtuoso 3 way 8 inch woofer, Symphony 2 or 3 way 6.5 inch Woofer (Sonance.com) Both brands highly regarded in the custom install industry. KEF are English while Sonance are American. Australian distributor for both is Audioworks, contact them for a dealer in Melbourne. (Audioworks is a division of Amber Technology, go to their site and link through. ambertech.com.au)
fawlty99 Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 I've got Niles which work fine. They are not fully enclosed but I packed behind them with sound insulating batts (rockwool). I wouldn't use them for mains/centre but great for surrounds in my awkward shaped room.
JoshH Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 Triad in walls www.triadspeakers.com - they come complete with tuned back box enclosures. Best in wall speakers I have yet come across - with price tags to match though.... Bronze entry level will set you back more than a grand a piece - but... TOP quality loudspeakers and blow infinate baffles out of the water.
marks Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 I have some B&W and Aaron in-ceiling speakers. Both are pretty good but I do believe the B&W sound better.
Guest EZYHD Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 So Couj, there you have it, so many different brands available, all about the same for rears. Let us know here what you finish up with.
zorg1503559539 Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 klipsch also have some good ones as do paradigm, i know audiotrends did have some on special in melbourne might be worth a call to see if they still have them..
marks Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 I just remembered, I created a similar thread about 2.5 years ago: http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=10351
Couj Posted April 12, 2007 Author Posted April 12, 2007 Wow, that is quite a list. Lots for me to look into and it seems that the brands mentioned above cover many different price points. Thank you to everyone for your input. I'll enjoy investigating this further.
Couj Posted April 12, 2007 Author Posted April 12, 2007 Worx A4, who sells the Triad speakers in Australia?
JoshH Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 Worx A4, who sells the Triad speakers in Australia? I do. They are imported by Wavetrain Acoustics in Sydney - but Cableman distribute them in Victoria. I also do Sonance, Mordaunt Short, Jamo, SpeakerCraft, Klipsch, etc.. but the Triads are the best of the best IMO. Put it this way.. Triad speakers are what I put in my house for multi-room audio and for my main living room. Thats probably the highest reccomendation I can give them. That said.. there is nothing wrong with any of the other brands mentioned either - all of them will give acceptable results.
zorg1503559539 Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 having seen some of Work's setup I can vouch for only the best
