mysticf1re
So our TV in the bedroom blew up. Awesome chance to grab a new LCD/PLASMA TV!! So guys, whats the current good stuff out there? Was looking to be placed on a table via a stand, LCD/Plasma (doesnt matter), 39" to 42". Integrated Tuner Digital would be good, as so with speakers. So whats the current sweet/sane price-size lcd/plasma tv with the good reputation and popularity?? I need to narrow it down before i buy, thanks! (have been reading the other threads but would like my own thread to address my question directly), cheers!!

Whats the ext warranty and where should i buy? JBHIFI? You say delivery, where from? Well, what makes this TV a good buy? Is it cheap for the size? Would like to hear other lcds too btw: to be honest, the only HD content i will be watching is the FTA HD Channels. The other things is normal DVD and Foxtel Digital. Am i better off getting a SD Tv? As i heard that when HD tvs are used to view non-hd stuff (SD) , it displays it really bad. and nothing is in HD, not even dvds yet (unless you use hddvd-bluray etc).. edit: How about the : Sony 42" KF42E200 Bravia 3LCD Rear Projection TV, its almost half the price..... Not 100% sure about the rear projections... but have heard the lamps cost a mint and pic is not all that sharp. Also seem very critical in a lighted room... Not true about the SD on HD sets, from what i've heard and seen. The SD tv on mine is almost impossible to tell from the hd transmissions... just get more background detail in the hd progs. Curious to hear where you got that story from?? Spent 2 months deciding between lcd and plasma. New lcds are good, damn good the 1900x?? res ones, but just not quite up to the plasma standard yet... the blacks and whites shadings are still annoying, also at the moment they are around $1000 more. Maybe soon..?? I went for the plasma... 42" Panasonic TH-42PX600A with inbuilt tuner, better than I expected, couldnt be happier.. External tuners are a bit of a pain with the extra remote, extra cables etc, but some people like to fiddle so that part is up to you.... If you are looking for "cheap", there are some real steals out there at the moment but they are usually SD models with no tuner, but very adequate if you want to save a few $$$s. If you intend keeping the set for a while its best to something decent. There is no substitute for having a good read on here and visiting as many shop displays as you can... be careful though some may appear better in one shop than another... usually has nothing to do with the TV. Also take sales recommendations with a grain of salt too, they vary from person to person and quite often are very wrong. A neighbour of mine got landed with a rear projection set because the friendly salesman said it was good and offered him an unbelievable deal (they only wanted to clear the things).... he now looks at my plasma and weeps. mysticf1re
thanks hunterdata, i too am looking at the Panasonic, seems to be stirring lots of good reviews. But can you help me explain whats the difference between these 3 , 42" Pana LCDs? 106cm (42inch) Viera Widescreen Plasma TV [Model No: TH-42PV500A] http://panasonic.com.au/products/specifica...m?objectID=2636 VIERA TH-42PV60A 42inch Plasma TV - (HD) [Model No: TH-42PV60A] http://panasonic.com.au/products/specifica...m?objectID=3127 Viera TH-42PX600A 42 inch (106cm) Plasma IDTV (HD) [Model No: TH-42PX600A] http://panasonic.com.au/products/specifica...m?objectID=3402 Casue, they are all the same size, but one is 1,000 more expensive, then you have two worth the same RRP but different models :S Located in NSW And one mroe thing, what would cost more, a LCD or Plasma of the same size?? ( i knoew generally, plasma = sport..) lol
hunterdata
106cm (42inch) Viera Widescreen Plasma TV [Model No: TH-42PV500A] http://panasonic.com.au/products/specifica...m?objectID=2636 PV is older model than the PX (alphabetical sequence) some minor specs difference, have a read on the site link... If you want the latest model get the PX, if you want to save a few $$$ buy the older model. VIERA TH-42PV60A 42inch Plasma TV - (HD) [Model No: TH-42PV60A] http://panasonic.com.au/products/specifica...m?objectID=3127 Same as ablove except it doesnt have a built in HD tuner. Viera TH-42PX600A 42 inch (106cm) Plasma IDTV (HD) [Model No: TH-42PX600A] http://panasonic.com.au/products/specifica...m?objectID=3402 Just buy this one and be amazed at the picture (and sound) qulaity... Might cost more but worth every cent... How long will you keep the set for?? Casue, they are all the same size, but one is 1,000 more expensive, then you have two worth the same RRP but different models :S Pay no attention to RRP $'s ... they are all BS!!! and as i said, i dont view any HD content besides the FTA-HD channels, so would SD LCD be a "smart" thing to buy instead? Go to the stores and have a look at one or two lcds and see if the lack of definition in whites and blacks bother you... make sure they set it to a tv station transmission so you can also spot the blurr on motion pics and the jagged lines on straight edges... quite annoying. And one mroe thing, what would cost more, a LCD or Plasma of the same size?? ( i knoew generally, plasma = sport..) lol In the 42" range, equivalent plasma is about $1000 less than a LCD and a better picture too in my opinion but that gap is closing fast with the new lcds. You still have not mentioned what area you are in...??? Roughly will do.. Also if you intend to sit either the lcd or plasma on a base in the bedroom make very sure it is securely anchored as they can be tipped over easily. Wall mounting is very recommended. I almost got a Hitachi instead of the Panasonic... they are a nice set... the Philips are good too but the large frame to accomodate the backlighting seems to make them look not so good aestheticaly, to me anyway. Well... being in Sydney you will have the world at your feet... Go to a few stores, have a good look around as you will be staring at this thing for a while so dont rush into it. Take a notebook and pen as the model numbers all become a mess after a while... Once you have done that you will be able to narow down what is the best choice for your needs. Or you could just get the TH-42PX600A and live happily ever after ??? (grin) Cheers and good luck.
pgdownload
Lots of good advice, but just a thought - 42" is pretty big for a bedroom TV? Additionally a HD screen is quite an outlay if you only watch it occasionally? (How far away will your head be from the screen?) You could pretty easily drop the size a touch (say 32"-36") and go for a SD screen (same panasonic models) and save yourself a grand or more, with little drop in PQ? Just a thought Peter Gillespie

Being old & no HDMI ports at a guess it would be SD You can't go past a panda, I have a VIERA TH-42PV60A 42inch Plasma TV - (HD) & it upscales SD very well, they only have a built in annaloge tunner. these are going for around $1800. You will have to buy either a SD or a HD tunner to go with this tv to get the best out of it. Also the Viera TH-42PX600A 42 inch (106cm) Plasma HDTV , has build in HD tunner also a very good TV , these are going for about $2300 Both of these tv's will turn a SD signal (such as dvd) into a very good picture that is near HD. I still get blown away sometimes at how good the PQ is & I,ve had mine for 4 months, also I mainly feed it a SD FTA signal. Just my apinion though
activeckc
Friend of mine is picking up a Soniq 1920 x 1080 for $2200 at JB http://www.soniqav.com/Qvision.php?mdm=3f455f102c22e17b6749e68219fcdaeb ?://http://www.soniqav.com/Qvision.php?...e68219fcdaeb ?://http://www.soniqav.com/Qvision.php?...e68219fcdaeb ?://http://www.soniqav.com/Qvision.php?...e68219fcdaeb ? activeckc
QUOTE Visual Angle H2556(RGB) x V480 cells (852 x 480 Pixel) refers to Cell Arrangement - can't find any info on google - anyone have any ideas?
activeckc
H2556(RGB) Horizontal 852r 852g 852b, vertical 480 cells = native res I guess.
pgdownload
Visual Angle refers to the how obliquely you can view the TV away from front on and still see the picture. In this instance the 'value' provided is just a cut and paste database error. Check some of the other sets for correct values (usually about 89 degrees) Regards Peter Gillespie
Nevyn72
Given that this page is for a 42" plasma I would be very surprised if it has a resolution of 1920x1080! A pixel pitch or roughly 1mm makes it a 856x480 screen........ I think there is something seriously wrong with that whole spec sheet!!
mybrains
I would check out the Sony V series 40" lcd. I think they have hit $<3000 and have an excellent colour picture for the current crop of lcds. 1366x768. ALso the Sony X series and Samsung equiv do support 1920x108o true HD. As does the new sharp 42". Price goes up here a bit.
