But where is Denon and Onkyo BD player?

Not my point at all and you know it.

There is nothing wrong with the Samsung BD player but by the same token it is overpriced and only an "average CE device" - its SD DVD scaling imo is only on par with a $300 DVD player and it is missing the HW to enable support for the next version of BDj.

Compare this to the G1 & G2 Toshiba HD DVD players which are half the price, not missing any features (PAL Support doesn't count for the G1 players as they are a US/Jap only model) and is on par with the best HD Scaling DVD players I've seen (eg Denon 2910 & 3910, Pioneer 969 etc).

Its a pity it only does 1080p/24 for BluRay.

Apparently HD DVD can't do 1080p/24 properly yet. Apparently HD DVD has been doing 1080p/24 -> 1080i/60 -> 1080p/24 conversion, and haven't finalised the process properly yet (that what I have read in the links provided in the first post)...

This is a shame, means I will have to keep waiting, and waiting..... and waiting

This is a HD Chipset issue* and one shared by all the BluRay & HD DVD players (Samsung, Sony, Toshiba & Panasonic) currently on the market too.

*Current 1080p models = 1080p/24 -> 1080i/60 -> 1080p/60

Isn't it amazing that all the licensing issues seem to have got lost in all of this somewhere, unlike Sony to allow people to jump ship without sueing for a quarter of a trillion.

Who says sony isn't suing em. They just did the math and realised even with the lawsuit losses, BD alone was gonna bankrupt em

I'd like to say that Samsung aren't worth sueing but I won't :D

It could be that Sony want Samsung to bridge the gap because Sony might want to do the same sometime soon, possibly the PS3 is not cost effective to derail HD DVD .

Sony will need something more than the PS3 to anchor their format as their co-manufacturers are so lethargic in their support of the format.

never denied by onkyo. A bogus press release was put up on a page that Skid was bandying about where Meridian were supposed to have denied making a HD DVD player, but they put up an official announcement on their own homepage saying they were putting that bit of BD fanboi inspired rubbish to bed and were in fact in development of a Meridian HD DVD player.

Onkyo reps were at CES at the actual announcement.

Are you referrring to the AV zombie articles momaw?..

Meridian refutes HD DVD hardware announcement

Meridian will not be releasing an HD DVD player anytime soon. So says brand spokesman John Bamford, who claims that he was surprised to read that the company had been announced as a hardware partner by the HD DVD Promotion Group during its Las Vegas CES press event.

“We’re interested in HD DVD, but we’re also interested in Blu-ray,” says Bamford. “Meridian has been helping the HD DVD group with encoding and technical issues but our involvement appears to have been blown up out of all proportion. If we were to launch an HD DVD deck it would not appear for years.”

Meridian to introduce HD DVD player

British high-end AV company Meridian is to introduce an HD DVD player in 2007. The brand is one of several high profile new members for the HD DVD hardware club. The signing was announced by the HD DVD promotional group at the Las Vegas CES. Also now lined up to produce HD DVD players are Japanese brand Onkyo and Chinese makers Shinco, Venturer and ED Digital.

Shinco says that it will market its player initially in the US and Canada. The player does not yet have a retail price but the brand says that it “expects retail pricing of the HD-A100 to place it at the opening price point for HD DVD players, making it attractive to a wide range of consumers.”

For the record momaw, considering the term you chose, Bandying ie "to exchange (words) argumentatively" (if thats what you're meaning) .. I have never argued that Meridian would or would not release a HD-DVD or BD player. As you would put it, I was only passing on the information. ie referring to this article for further discussion and/or clarification...

Like I have said numerous times , there are a lot of mixed messages out there.

I have always hoped the likes of Meridian and Denon will release "higher end" players.

This is why I attempt to reference everything, so one can see if the information is out of date or one can to determine how "reliable" the source is.

As for your claims that the above articles were bogus and fanboy inspired; I have usually found the posts at AV Zombie to be reliable, and they don't appear to be biased against or for either format.

As for the topic in hand, I really haven't heard any more about it (ie. if Meridian will release a HD-DVD player this year)

Yawn. Fiction is still fiction regardless of the source. Meridian's own actual press release on their own actual page refuted your little story yet you continued to reference the fictional story up to a month later even though the truth had come to light.

It's interesting that you claim to be trying to help out and inform people with the articles you reprint here, but the fact that you only paste pro BD / anti HD DVD articles is a habit that has not gone unnoticed and serves to highlight your real motives. I understand how frustrating it must be when very few articles actually have any thing bad to say regarding the HD DVD format and hence your need to be able to reference material on sites even if it is found to be false, or a more accurate up-to-date version exists. Sad really, and it reeks of desperation. Claims of neutrality and altruism - bah. And then you have the gall to question others motives. But whatever.

I doubt we will see a meridian player this year, and even if we did it would be out of the reach of the masses. The Onkyo player should hit shelves this year though *fingers crossed*.

What are you saying CM? Sony might eventually build HD-DVD players? That would make me grin...

I guess it happened with VHS though...

When it comes to money, there are no boundaries for some corporations.

The answer is " YES !!!!! ", sooner or later a Blu-ray/HD DVD player will appear under the brand name of ' YONS '.

You continually misinterpret my posts momaw..

altruism? what the hell are you talking about?

I'm asking if you are referring to the AV Zombie articles....

As you can see, first they published that Meridian was to release a HD-DVD player and then they reported an interview which stated Meridian wasn't going to release a HD-DVD player "anytime soon."

By my standards, this is not a derogative or negative comment about the HD-DVD format in general

and once more for the record, I have posted so-called "negative" and "positive" material.

It appears you want to "pidgeon hole" .. "stereotype" contributors momaw.. this has more to say about your own personality.

Bring on the dual format players, I say, to end all this crap

And the war may end with a draw.............with eventually both sides just building dual-format players, just like with DVD +-R/RW units.
