Kirium Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Blu-ray may have the upper hand in the North American high-definition market, but HD DVD appears to be the format of choice in Europe. European movie studios are favoring HD DVD over Blu-ray due to the cost savings involved in HD DVD duplication for these independent European studios, according to a report on the Financial Times (subscription). http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070...ean-market.html
momaw Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070...ean-market.html Nothing new there to those who actually inform themselves on these topics but Kirium, I think you are about to get the whining wrath of the BD faithful Kamma has a bunker you can hide out in until the dust settles
Bob51 Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 These sorts of media reports don't mean much. One of two outcomes are likely for high definition video disc : 1. Neither BD or HD-DVD are accepted by sufficient numbers of customers to warrant the software companies producing content. I can't see what factors will drive the mass market to adopt high definition until prices are sub $500. Even then they could struggle - the average punter seems quite happy with SD DVD and may not be prepared to buy either HD format until the industry can standardise on one. 2. One of BD or HD-DVD survive. If I was a betting man it will be BD. There are enough lessons in history to show the format that has most of the major manufacturers supporting it will prevail. With all the big guns of Panasonic, Pioneer, JVC, Philips, Sony, Samsung behind BD, mass market shoppers will be very wary of going the way of HD-DVD. Toshiba, NEC, LG and Sanyo just do not have the same brand respect or marketing clout. The industry really is crazy to go down two paths. I will be sitting on the fence and waiting till the dust settles.
momaw Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 You do know it is possible both will survive. The precedent exists in other industries where more than one format successful competes for the same market.

I can understand your POV Personally, I support "dual format scenario" but who knows? Ignore momaw any one says a good thing about BD or a bad thing towards HD-DVD is supposedly a BD fanbot
betty boop Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 ~. I will be sitting on the fence and waiting till the dust settles. and that si what the bulk of industry as well are doing.

I can understand your POVPersonally, I support "dual format scenario" but who knows? Ignore momaw any one says a good thing about BD or a bad thing towards HD-DVD is supposedly a BD fanbot I was in our local BigW on the wekend I must have been blind to not see anything there. they might have some odd titles at $25, but jsut check otu what those same titles cost in the bin next to them as DVDs. and then ask which your bigW customer is goign to choose. ofcourse they could go to JB to buy their blu-ray titles they'll probably find they have to pay $47 fo them there though. if theres anythign that strikes out from this thread is that price fo the formats is defintely an issue to people. people wont in my opinion pay a bundle more for anythign especially if they cant see them selvess realise any significant gains in doing do.

There have been confirmed sightings of HD DVDs at Kmart. btw, what BD specifically did you see for $25 at BigW ? Andrew.
Skid_MacMarx Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 I picked up "Corpse Bride" for $25 at Big W where it was about $35 or $38 at Myer/Sanity/JBs... and $40 at Target They had about a dozen titles ranging from $25 to $29 ... Although I have noticed not all Big W stores stock them. I will check the local Kmart at the weekend for you Andrew...

If they are dropping the prices below import prices already, then the future is rosy. Andrew.
