Peterpack Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 They are taking up a lot of room ! I want to throw them away but feel i should keep them for a bit. How long do you keep your boxes for ? You don't need them to return if there's a problem do you ?
jordang Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 They are taking up a lot of room ! I want to throw them away but feel i should keep them for a bit.How long do you keep your boxes for ? You don't need them to return if there's a problem do you ? i'm glad you asked that. because i often find myself in the same quandry. The inner conflicts that i face with this gets me... if I throw it out and something breaks... what will happen? if I don't throw it out i'm hording and i'm becoming my mother? what happens if I move and need stuff to pack dvd's in? what if i have children one day and they won't have anything to make a little fort out of?? It feels better knowing i'm not alone in this world. p.s. the correct answer would be 'no', you don't need the box to return the screen if it's faulty. the only reason i could think you would need it if you're returning it for an exchange/refund but the thing still works... if the shop would take it back, that is.
pgdownload Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 They are taking up a lot of room ! I want to throw them away but feel i should keep them for a bit.How long do you keep your boxes for ? You don't need them to return if there's a problem do you ? Well its all pretty much down to storage space. Basically my rule of thumb is 2-4 weeks definitely keep. If you want to return a new unit for some reason then it just makes the whole process easier. Also makes shipping etc. if needed simpler in the original packaging. However boxes aren't required where the unit is faulty and you're quite entitled to hand back a bunch cables and the unit itself and ask the store to 'sort it' Regards Peter Gillespie
ando9185 Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 I had to return a faulty product recently and was told that I would need the original packaging. I was lucky I had kept the box in storage because we often move and those pieces of styrofoam and the original box just gave the TV extra protection. I already had heaps of trouble trying to return it because the original receipt had been thrown out, although I had a return authorisation number from the company. So my answer, if it's something you can store under the house or not in the way, keep it, they can always be reused. I finally got rid of that old TV box after 11 months (It was a 12 month warranty) but will now be keeping the new TV box for 24 months at least (just in case).
drsmith Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 If you buy a big enough television, you have a big enough box to put all the smaller boxes into.
Hydrology Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 The nature of electronics nowadays I keep the boxes for everything!
jfbari Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 I have a neighbour who is in the removals industry and he told me once that to purchase a box that will fit a 106cm Plasma it costs the customer $100 I would hang on to it as the flat panels dont transport very well without a box.
byte-me Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 I keep all my boxes until the warranty period expires.
Cooksta59 Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 I've had my plasma for 15 months and still have the box in the shed.I have the room so figured it would be the best way to transport for repair or removals if needed.(if a removalist wanted $100 for a box to put my plasma in I would go elsewhere)
fawlty99 Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 You can't be refused a return because the box is no longer available. However it is useful for moving later if required.
gkelly Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 Unless you really do not have the space to store the box then I would say keep it for as long as possible. It will be handy when/if you move. Otherwise keep it at least until the warrenty expires.
AndrewWilliams Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 Finding storage space for a box for a 70" TV isn't easy. I had to throw it away. Usually people who hoard boxes are the same people who hoard lots of other crap. There's just no need unless you move a lot.
Peterpack Posted April 9, 2007 Author Posted April 9, 2007 yeah i really have no room but i may collapse the boxes and store them in my parent's shed
Mr.Bitey Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 I chuck em the day after. You dont need the box to return it for an exchange/refund (and makes you feel better) Its someone else's problem if you need a service call (and they need to take it away) Its someone else's problem if you need to move house - thats what the removalists pay their insurance for (or your insurance!) Cheers, Bitey
aztec Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 I chuck em the day after. Likewise, or even earlier
ozlooper Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Likewise, or even earlier I bought a 40" LCD and the box didn't fit in the car. The sales rep and I unpacked the tv and I drove it home (very carefully). The store kept the box for 14 days!
strange_one Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 I almost threw mine out straight away, but then I had to return the TV repairs twice within the first three months so I'm glad I didn't. I recommend keeping the box at least until the warranty period expires. If you rent then it is also a good idea to keep as chances are you might move at least once in the TVs lifetime
byte-me Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Likewise, or even earlier That's it, from now on I'm throwing my boxes away before I even get the stuff out of them.
Autocrat Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 I bought a 40" LCD and the box didn't fit in the car. The sales rep and I unpacked the tv and I drove it home (very carefully). The store kept the box for 14 days! You could have strapped it to the roof.
Zacspeed Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Keeping the boxes is very handy however as mentioned the bulkiness makes them difficult to keep about the house. I try to keep all my boxes for the reasons of warranty, or incase I need to move house etc as if breakage occurs and the item wasnt properly packed then things like warranty, insurance etc can become void. Even after the warranty period to make room what I sometimes do is get rid of the foam etc and make the cardboard box into a flat pack as such & makes storage 100 times easier. If I ever need it again I can still use the box, but will need new internal padding so I will use what I can find, ie bubble wrap, foam peanuts, or foam from other boxes etc etc.

drsmith Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 There are no cockroaches in my collection of boxes, but the SXRD box is big enough to house a bloop.
AndrewW Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 I still have the original box from my Commodore 64 Andrew.
Foggy Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 I can't believe that we're onto the 2nd page and no one has mentioned the ability to advertise your product as "with all original packaging" when it comes to upgrade time Fortunately, I have a dungeon downstairs that comes in handy for storing boxes... although it is getting a little tight down there
drsmith Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 I still have the original box from my Commodore 64 Andrew. Have you've still got the Commodore 64 ? Didn't that have blinking lights like the control panels in the Jupiter 2 ?
