Is it possible to play dvds that have been converted to MP4 on the PS3 either from a USB key or external hard drive ?

Has anyone tried this out or got it to work well yet ?

Is the PS3 going to be able to be set up as a decent media centre..........i would hope that with all the USB slots and being able to plug in some external drives you would be able to store a lot of your movies externally and play them back through a PS3 ??

I havent used a USB key or external drive to play them but I have copied a couple of episodes of Lost onto DVDR and played them from that. I could also copy thm to the internal drive if I wanted to. PS3 Video 9 is a great program if your files arent supported by the PS3.

I use PS3 Video 9, Works a treat..

I also use an early version of PS3 media center X to copy the files over the network..

That media software is very limited atm, but maby then its finished it will be an effective program for streaming media on the PS3 from your pc network..

what file types does the ps3 support?

For video it handles mp4 (and AVC), mpeg-1, AVCHD and I assume mpeg-2. Although its rather particular about what mp4 videos it likes.

For audio it handles aac, mp3 and I'm not sure what else.

You would think so  Has anyone tested this though? The Xbox360 should be able to play 1080p AVC also but it gives an error when trying to stream any h264 encoded files.

So does the PS3 'dashboard' (did Sony give it a name?) have like a media centre interface like the 360? How does streaming work?

Yeah. Sony provides a few 1080p AVC movie trailers on the Playstation Store.

Currently it doesn't stream (my biggest lament). You can plugin an external HDD and use that though. Or you could use workarounds like the Orb program, but it doesn't work very well ime.

As for the 'dashboard''s name. Its called the Cross Media Bar (XMB).

Just found out the PS3 supports H264 1080p playback, but only Main profile. The X360 spring update includes H264 1080p playback up to High profile.

How much difference is that likely to make given the 360 has a lower maximum bitrate?

Can you point me to a sample to try?

EDIT: Found a sample and PS3 Video didn't like it. I only managed by transcoding it to h246/mp4 with VLC and then again with PS3 Video 9 as the PS3 didn't really like the VLC encode

And even then it was audio-free as VLC didn't understand the 5.1 WMA audio that was part of the original file.

I also have a few questions on the PS3 if someone knowlegable could be kind enough to answer.

I have a PSP, and I download TV shows form the net as AVI's, and use either image converter or PSP Video 9 to conver them to the PSP format and file structure, place on a memorystick and I watch the shows I miss out on when I travel.

So will the PS3 handle the same file format as my PSP becuase downloading and converting a 1 hour show takes hours and I dont want to have to re convert these shows again - its such a pain. If only PSP could handle AVI files.

So will the PS3 handle the same files as the PSP, and does it have to be in a specific file path to read it like PSP. Or do I need new software and re convert everything all over again.

Like I said I download shows when I am away, so when I come home it would be nice if the PSP handled the same format as PS3 that way I could watch the shows either off the PS3 or on the PSP when i travel again.

Thanks all

reading through you mention the PS3 can convert DIVX with video 9?

Say i have a DVDR with 5 avi files on it. Can i put that in the PS3 and watch it

from there or do you save them to disk and convert them?

Nope, it wont work - you have to convert the DivX files on a PC using 'PS3 Video 9', and then you can watch the 'converted' file on your PS3

ah ok.....does PS3 video 9 come with the PS3 or do you download it?

Is the quality any different converting the files? not that DIVX files

are very good anyway.
