Has anyone compared the PS3 against another Blu-Ray player yet? Just wondering if there is a difference in PQ or anything else? I only ask because when I played a DVD on a PS2 on a friends TV, it appeared a little blocky. I didn't think much of it at the time putting it down to her cheap, small TV whereas I'm used to a screen twice the size but then someone else said that a PS2 doesn't return a picture as good as a DVD player.

I'd be expacting stuff all difference if any at all but still thought I'd pose the question.

I think you'll find it probably does a good job on the video side as a blu-ray player. on the audio side it is lacking, no dts-HD support, no analog outs. not sure it even has dolby digital plus suport either. plus its missign an IR port aparantly so cant use an IR remote with it have to buy a speicla ad-on or use a blu-tooth remote.

i'm looking out of a decent stand alone playuer myself, but with the blu-ray spec being changed in july. think I'll wait till after that.

All reviews I have read say that it is actually one of the best BD players for PQ.

It supports optical and HDMI for audio out, and will output the uncompressed PCM tracks which sound great.

DTS HD MA gets output as 1.5Mbps DTS and sounds good, but not as good as the uncompressed PCM.

PS3 is one of the best Br player on the market, apart from some of the shortcoming that Al stated it is a product that is actually more technically advanced than most of the BR players near its price range. Most of the current players can't be upgraded to profile 1.1 or

2.0 PS3 can. I think this might be because Sony expect PS3 to have longer product life cycle than the ordinary BR player which has

shelf life of about 1 year.

an ordinary BR player has a shelf life of only 1 year

who then expects to pay $1000 for a BR player if it is only going to last a year?

not a very good marketing tactic from BR device manufacturers

i still have my DVD player i bought 4-5 years ago today

I think you misunderstood. shelf life refers to the period it is available on the retailers' shelves!

i think its a great player - just missing DTS-HD MA decoding and/or bitstream support. id prefer ir remote capability, but have got used to using the controller.

i'll upgrade to a dedicated player when all the mess with profiles, decoding etc have been sorted out and prices come down.

I'm holding out and hoping that they release a software upgrade to decode DTS Master Audio or even better bit stream it. It has not been confirmed it is possible or not yet, but that hasn't stopped the internet hero's speculating :P

For now its the cheapest entry point for an up to date player, with the benifit of being software upgradeable.

It is a keeper and I am hoping the firmware upgrade will allow it to output bit stream. It is a great player and

can do a lot more than a standalone BR player.

I'm very happy with the PS3 as a blu ray player..... it is much better then any other stand alone player under $2k .... plus its much more versatyle..... media server, games machine, etc....

the Xbox should come with a HD DVD player as standard.... hopefully the next version will ....

can anyone give me a reason why my bluray movie is playing jittery please

Probably would help to know:

1. Which movie?

2. Which player?

The movie is fantastic 4 the silver surfer, I am using ps3 40gig hdmi into onkyo 605 with a hdmi out from the onkyo into a samsung 40"1080p full hd lcd la40f81bdx by jittery i mean every 20secons or so the movie will look like it lags for a sec then it is ok but will continue lagging every 20 secons or so for a sec creating a jittery look. i tried playing it at 1080i but is still the same, since writing my first post i have changed the tv settings a touch, reducing sharpness and selecting cool1 and running standard mode seems to have worked a little bit but it is still there.

The only reason I am not running out to buy a Ps3 or a Blu-ray player now is the DTS Master Audio.

As soon as they confrim they can stream DTS HD and not just normal DTS then I be the first to give Sony my $700 for a player.

I thought it was hardware limitations, meaning that it will never come for existing PS3's???

Seems the later versions use stripped down version of the HDMI 1.3a spec which means bistreaming over HDMI is not possible. Now, I'm repeating something I heard fifth hand so this might need to be verified. However, it seems to be theoretically possible for the PS3 itself to be programmed to decode the DTS-HD(MA) and output as PCM over HDMI. Again, I'm just repeating something someone else said and a few people have been repeating. I guess the answer is we don't know if it will happen but we're hopeful.

In the meantime, I'm with al, waiting for a decently priced, fully featured BD player .
