Samsung 42" Plasma Sound Issue?

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I recenty purchased a Samsung 42" Plasma PS42Q7HD, I have noticed that when I turn on the unit to watch FTA tv the volume is very low but when I change the source to say component 1 and then switch back to the tv mode (tv/dtv on the remote) the volume is high again.

Does anyone know why this occurs and how to fix it? or is there something wrong with my unit?

Cheers.

I have the same issue with my 50 inch version...would suspect it is design problem. I do not believe there is any qualitative variation going on, just a change in level. As such I have decided that since this be the only problem I have with this uint not to bother since most plasma/lcd units on the market are suffering teething problems. This is the least of the problems these type of sets are experiencing. But, to put ur mind at ease, you ar enot the only one. Otherwise my samsung has impressed me and been faultless.

For interest sake, it may be worth reporting back our software versions from the menu as i am sure this sort of fault could be rectified there.

My partner just bought one of the 42" versions of this set today and I noticed the same problem.

If anyone knows of a solution I'd like to know of it.

I've got to say the 42" is a great buy at the price we got it for.

It was $1,920 for the 42" "HD" plasma with integrated HD Tuner.

Specs available here:

Got it from Hardly Normal by showing them a copy of this Ad:

I just rang Samsung and spoke with one of their Tech's and he said that I should just take the plasma back to HN and swap it over for a new one, which they'll do no questions asked.

He said it's not a "class problem". He heard of one three months ago that had the problem but he hasn't heard on one since.

I asked him how long I had in order to get a replacement unit and he said within 14 days of purchase.

It's a hassle but it's worthwhile replacing.

HI guys, my software version is;

T_JAGU2DAUO_1000

Product;

JAGUAR2_

Seems I have an older version but with same problem.

Importantly I have discovered a more critical issue to me in the process. My digital output seems only ever to give me L & R signals to my Dolby Digital decoder. This I am upset about as the unit was purchased with the expectation of having AC3 sound output. Do not see the point in having a digital output ot be stuck with stereo sound. Am waiting to assess on material which may be more likely to actually be transmitted in AC3.

Can anyone enlighten me to the current transmissions and if any are clearly 5.1 or are the stations being slack and giving only stereo delivery. I notice on my PC based digital tuner that there is a clear indication when AC3 is being received although since I dont connect it to any theatre system am not sure if there is any other channels present. Either way this is NOT acceptable.

Anyone else add comment to this.

damn.. it is a very big hassle and i don't even have the original box anymore.

i may give samsung a call to confirm if it is a return case.

They told me today that I should just ring the retailer (HN in my case) and take the plasma back even if I don't have the packaging and HN will swap it for another one. Go for it if the sound problem annoys you enough.

Apex, I have the same set, not sure of the software release, but I am experiencing this problem also, which is discouraging. The TV states it is a 'Dolby Digital' signal and my decoder picks up a DD signal but I am still stuck with 2 Channels...... I find that if I turn the decoder to Pro Logic mode it does 5.1 pretty good.

I would prefer not to have to use PL though.

Anybody else have any comments on this?

Is there a way to upgrade firmware on these things, as I dont see the firmware being available over the air any time soon...

well, i finially found the time to go exchange my plasma for another unit brand new in box, got home and unpacked the plasma, plugged it all in to find that the same issue i experienced with the other plasma was still there in the new one, so i can only assume it's a firmware issue rather than a hardware fault.

anyone know of a fix? the funny thing i notice is if you go into the DTV menu and go to the sound option you will notice that there is mpeg and dolby digital and then after a few times of turning it on and off either dolby digital is the only section you have or mpeg

anyone noticed this?

Yes, I do have 5.1, i saw the lights come on for "lost" the other night. Bit sad they wont transmit much yet.

Anyone keen to open a vote to convince the stations to get with the times?

Sorry to hear the level problem is still there. Anyone know what is involved in geting a firmware upgrade if they ever fix the issue?
