G'day guys,

I've enjoyed reading through the wealth of knowledge on these forums over the last couple of weeks, and now comes the time where I simply have to ask for specific opinions to suit what i'm looking to get out of a panel.

I've been procrastinating on a purchase for awhile now - and everytime I see tearing on my 22" LCD whilst gaming on the 360, it brings me that little bit closer to investing in something better.

The display will be mainly used for gaming and home theater work, no doubt with HD-DVD player intentions in the not to distant future.

I've considered grabbing the 24" and 27" Dell screens for around $1000 & $2000 respectively, but am assuming that there are far better prospects at that price range - that's where I need your help!

The Bravias and Samsungs definitely stood out when I had a look in town today, just as expected. They really are stunning displays.

Do I go for 1080? Or do I invest in a solid performing 720p display? View distance is flexible here, and i'm happy to re-organise the area to suit the panel.

Im prepared to stretch out to 3-3.5ish, but if anything decent can be picked up cheaper than I won't hesitate to snap that up either.

Thanks in advance for all help offered,

Cheers

If the screen tearing is your main concern with the 360, a new display probably isn't going to help you. The tearing is a v-sync feature (ie no v-sync) with many 360 games. Saints Row and Blazing Angels about the worst.

It happens with mine on a CRT

I noticed it ALOT with Saints Row.

You're dead right, had the exact same problem with the same panel on the PC when playing around with v-sync.

Ever since getting HD goodness on the 22", I've been tempted to go bigger and better.

You may have just blown my excuse

I got a 42inch Sharp Aquos GD7x for $3320 this week. Very happy with it. It has the 1080 resolution.

I don't think you'll have a hard time here justifying that bigger is better

For around $1000 you can pick up the 42" Sony 3LCD rear-pro 1280x720p with HDMI input. Not a bad option until the price of 1080p panels comes down considerably. I've got the 50" Sony 3LCD (which is around $1600 these days) and use it with my Xbox and Xbox360 and it looks beaut. Worth a look IMHO.

You clearly stated your requirements what you want from your display. Because of this, you should definitely go for a LCD 1080p monitor. Here's a site that allows you to make a selection by reading the reviews especially from the experts and you can select the merchant offering the cheapest price of the selected item, (http://www.smartratings.com/electronics/plasma_and_lcds). Hope that helps. Thank you.

It depends if you intend to buy another TV in the near future or not. If you do then a 720p TV should suffice in the meantime. If not then a 1080p TV is the way to go to future-proof yourself.

Spot on above.

LCD is not my cup of tea, but the Sony range (V & X) are top notch :D I been looking at a lot of LCD's lately and reckon they are poor compared to PLASMA IMHO.

Plasma's to go for,

Panasonic 42" HD - $2400

&

Hitachi PD960DTA. You will at least get 1080i. I have the 8800 and 1080i is magic.

Cheers
