deang Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 Hi to all, I'm finally going to have a shot at using the DVD Essentials disc to calibrate the HDMI, VGA and Component inputs on my Fujitsu with the help of my brother. Before I start I was wondering if anyone knew which Picture mode to start off with as a base. I'm pretty sure it would be the 'Fine' setting but not sure. Would like to get this part sorted before we start. I know this model has no precision settings but I'd still like to get it looking the best I can with my other components. I'll post the settings we come up with in the next couple of days and see how other people's settings compare maybe. I have booked Aaron in a while ago but he is not sure when he will get to Adelaide. And before you say anything Obitus, - I know the black levels are crap right! Cheers, Dean
Paul Hughes Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 Dean, Yes, use the Fine picture mode. Cheers Paul
deang Posted April 14, 2007 Author Posted April 14, 2007 I’ve starting using the disc to try and set the Fujitsu and have had some mixed results compared to some other peoples settings. The disc is a little ambiguous in that it refers a lot to CRT based sets and says a lot of tests don’t work with PAL even though I have the PAL edition. It is a very informative disc none the less, explaining everything in great detail that is very easy to understand for some one like me who doesn’t really know what they are doing. The disc is easy to navigate when you use your remote control to get directly to the appropriate title and chapter that the tests are on. I downloaded the PDF file that goes with the DVD as well http://www.videoessentials.com/docs/DVE_Consumer_PAL.pdf which was pretty helpful. Component Input via Denon DVD-2200 Denon DVD-2200 I used Video Out – Progressive - “Mode 1” which is said to be the “level detection mode” which is the factory default, Black Level – Darker – which is also the factory default. Brightness - +5 Contrast - -1 Sharpness - -6 Fujitsu P50xha50as Contrast - 60-65 Brightness - +2 Colour - +4 Tint - 0 Sharpness - -16 Mode - fine Temp - standard The brightness test on Title 7 Chapter 2 seemed pretty straight forward and you could tell when the third outer stripe fully disappeared into the background. The point where all the ‘dancing’ pixels disappeared around all the stripes and the point where the third stripe fully blended in was at +2. A lot of people seem to use +4 but at this point I could still see the third stripe. The contrast test on Title 7 Chapter 3 doesn’t work at all on a plasma I think. I ended up trying to set the white level through the test on Title 13 Chapter 2. In this test you can set both the black and white level. The point where the inner white 100% box had a darker square just visible in it seemed to be at the +60 to +65 contrast setting. I also tried using the test on Title 12 Chapter 14 to set the contrast but it didn’t really help much. Does anyone know what the Signal Contrast setting does on the Fujitsu and whether I should be adjusting this as well? The colour test on Title 7 Chapter 4 seemed ok as well giving me a value of around +4. I just left the tint setting at 0. Sharpness is where I found things the most difficult. Most people I asked have their sharpness set to 0 which is way off the setting I came up with. Obviously I’m doing something wrong with a value of -16. From what I gather sharpness adds extra info to the picture and adds noise. The setting I get where there is no extra edges (lines) in the test on Title 7 Chapter 6 is at -16 Sharpness. This is the lowest possible setting on the Fujitsu as well. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong here. Is it just that this test wont work on plasmas properly? Even though I still don’t know if these settings are any where near correct according to the disc it does teach you a lot and I’m a lot more knowledgeable than a week ago. I received my Oppo DV-981HD a couple of days ago so I will have a shot at the HDMI input with the DVE disc later today and see how I go. Does anyone know if there is a calibration disc designed for HD plasmas? Any comments on the settings or disc would be really helpful and appreciated. Cheers, Dean
tonyf Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 What you are doing sounds fine, the bigger question is how does the picture look? Unfortunately those fuji's don't have the precision settings so can't really be tweaked as much as necessary. But are still quite a nice panel and picture quality in my opinion is still up there! (greyscale adjustment, adjusting the primaries and secondaries if possible, is what what an ISF calibration actually is along with adjusting the user settings like you have just done). There really isn't to much more you can do. If you are not to happy with the disc you used try another. I think there is one called GetGray, But DVE is quite good. Have a bit of search on the AVS forums for more info: http://www.avsforum.com/ Go to the top of the pageReport Post Edit Post
Owen Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 The Contrast adjustment procedure on DVE finds the MAXIMUM contrast setting that is usable, not what a Plasma should necessarily be set at for safe operation. Go easy on your contrast setting if you value your Plasma.
deang Posted April 17, 2007 Author Posted April 17, 2007 The picture looks great as far as I can tell. Most of the people I know that have plasmas or big screens say its the best picture they have ever seen when they come over. This happens all the time and is actually quite funny. I was happy before I started tinkering around with it and am even happier now. Its great that the Fujitsu can store 8 different settings on each input. You can choose what one you want for each occasion (daylight and evening viewing etc.). Its fun trying to adjust the picture settings and see the difference it makes. I still cant work out why my sharpness levels are so low using the DVE disc and others get a different value? Also, does anyone know what the signal contrast setting does as opposed to the contrast on this set? I wish this set did have the precision settings but oh well. Very happy with the PQ none the less compared to others I've seen. I like the Pioneers as well but they look a bit too colourful and glassy compared to the Fujitsu. My friend has a Pioneer and when watching TV it goes from looking spectacular to awful depending on what's on and what they quality of the broadcast is. Things seem to be a bit more level on the Fujitsu for some reason. There seems to be so many variables involved when trying to get your settings right that everything just becomes a compromise in the end anyway. With broadcast quality changing every different show and every DVD different no values could ever be exact every time I suppose. I'd really love to see what Aaron comes up with just as a base line in so far as what values a professional would get. Are the Pioneers the most tweakable sets out there or do most of them have advanced settings that can be manipulated like the older Fujitsu's?
