blacknbrindle Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 Can anyone tell me what bitrate their DTS-HD movies are running at when played on the PS3 . When i select the display button to show the information on the screen it only has DTS 1.5mbps shown . I have the system connected up via HDMI into my RX-V2700 and have the audio settings in the PS3 set to auto and it has all available formats selected that it can play , yet i think im only hearing just normal DTS audio not the lossless stuff i should be ? Are all the movies downmixed to 1.5 mbps on the PS3 ?

Hmm maybe you have a point there alebonau ........ on the case of the PS3 it only has the regular DTS symbol not the HD variant , but it does show Dolby TrueHD as another audio option so i just thought it decoded both . Maybe what im hearing is the best that the machine can decode in regards to DTS untill a further firmware update allows DTS-HD and HD MA to be decoded i guess ?

Cody Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 AFAIK, the PS3 does not decode (yet) DTS-HD, so yes would be decoding the full core DTS track only - which is 1.5mbs. does anything decode DTS-HD yet? cant think of any player that does...
digitalj Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 does the ps3 have a dts-HD decoder ? its probably only sending through core which is 1.5mbps which is the best coax can do. So what's the best optical can do?
Chesty Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 So what's the best optical can do? 5.1 DD and DTS. Thats it. And 2 channel PCM
digitalj Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 5.1 DD and DTS. Thats it. And 2 channel PCM Sorry, but I was asking about bitrate.
AndrewW Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 Sorry, but I was asking about bitrate. Highest bitrate optical can do is 1.5Mb/s But, seeing as the OP was asking about an HDMI connected device The PS3 does not currently have a DTS HD decoder. It was rumoured to be in the 1.6 firmware upgrade, but did not make an appearance Maybe n the next one ... So for now you are stuck with the 1.5Mb/s core DTS track. Andrew.

johnn1503560523 Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 I am selecting PCM via optical, then let my AVR do the 5.1 prologic stuffs. The sound is much better than the DD IMO.

Cody Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 hi dG if you check your manual you'll see the HD-A1/XA1 does infact decode DTS-HD (5.1) but no DTS-HD MA support as yet. oops, meant to say "MA"
betty boop Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 oops, meant to say "MA" no worried DG. is there any word of the tosh ever getting ma support ? or does that need some hardware changes ? I know jace used used to keep going on abotu the pana blu-ray getting an update enabling DTS-HD MA in april. its april now. wonder if that eventuated. i've got a dts-hd ma demo disc but wondering if there is in fact any actual movies utilising ?

Dolby then apply level changes at the decoder. The main difference is the bitrate, DTS is less compressedn than Dolby Digital.

I think that would depend on the particualr sound track. the bit rate used can vary a heap really. theres very few even fully utilisign the capabilities of dvd. Is DTS automatically better than DD I wouldnt agree.

Al ;Its a shame they dont use plain english for these codecs. The HD A1/XA1 doesnt decode dts-hd per se ; just the core 5.1 basic dts 1.5 mbps. If it did DTS HD it would decode the core plus the extension packet. If you say I was splitting hairs because it 'downmixes' the dts hd on the disc Ide have to agree with you
