tomohawk Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 I live in a ground floor apartment in a small two story building with 9 units. When I moved in here 2 months ago I could pick up all channels perfectly with a SD Digital tuner, but since getting Foxtel cable and having a CRT tv I tended to just watch FTA via the cable. Yesterday I decided to treat myself to a Bravia LCD with HD tuner. Plugged it into the wall... and it picks up nothing, no digital, no analogue. Plugged the old SD box back in, and what do ya know, it doesn't pick anything up at all? And old set of rabbit ears gets me mediocre 7 or ABC SOMETIMES, as long as I stand in awkward positions with it. Would this suggest that the antenna has been removed from the building, or that the cabling is damaged? Would this be something I could complain to the real estate agent about, as I previously had FTA reception but now dont (even with the same equipment) EDIT: I should note that I'm in Crawley in WA, next to UWA. I know this area doesnt' get the strongest FTA signal, but I used to get a reasonable signal...

Rusty Juggler Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 Not necessarily, I've seen situations where Foxtel combine the FTA cable and Foxtel Cable together before the outlet, so if you can get an F-PAL adapter, and plug the boxes into that outlet instead you may get reception. This is not allowed under the Foxtel MDU installation guidelines, not because it isn't technically possible but because Foxtel doesn't want it. It is debatable whether combining FTA and Foxtel is a good thing in the first place as there are all sorts of issues to take into account and doing it properly is quite expensive. Depending where you live there may be legislation preventing a Body Corporate to withdraw a service (i.e. FTA TV distribution) unless a bylaw has been passed that clearly stipulates this. If you are an owner in your block you should have minutes of the meeting where it was resolved to have Foxtel installed in the building. Check whether it says anything about discontinuing FTA. If you are a tennant, speak to your landlord / agent. Cheers Rusty

I had the foxtel cable installed here so i'm fairly sure that the FTA and Foxtel are separate. The antenna socket was already there and functional when I moved in, and I can see where the foxtel cable comes out the outside of the wall where the socket is and I can follow it right to the main 'box'.

I only mentioned it, because i remember a number of years ago where my Aunty was getting Foxtel, I was there and FTA and Foxtel were combined.

Would that be satellite? I know that diplexing the sattelite and FTA onto the same socket is a common occurance.

tomohawk Posted April 6, 2007 Author Posted April 6, 2007 May have been, she was in a unit, so don't know if it was satellite or cable. Fair enough! I managed to get all FTA channels perfectly tonight.... by stnding on my tippy toes holding a set of rabbit ears in the air just in front of the TV......... Not my idea of a comfortable night's viewing, though it does prove that it's not poor reception, rather poor equipment. I have managed to get a compromise... I blutacked said rabbit ears to my rowing machine next to the tv, which would pick up Ten and ABC (only when I was standing next to it mind you)... and then placed a large metal lamp next to it which seemed to convince it that I was still standing next to it and thus it thought it was still forcing me to stand up all night.... little did it know I had out smarted it.... Methinks a call to the property manager after the easter break is in order.... Ten HD looks beautiful on my panel though, I can finally say.
