Great thread! I am about to purchase the 60", and need a nice stand.

Does anyone have the official Sony stand for the 60", and if so what are your thoughts?

Also, does anyone know if the official 60" stand has a 'carved out' bit designed specifically for the 60" base?

Thanks,

BJ.

I've looked into using the Official Sony 70" stand with the 60" TV. It does have a carved out bit which caters for both the 60" & 70" and is also larger than the 60" stand, so it would accomodate my centre speaker and equipment better (The 70" stand is designed for both TV's). It's pretty expensive for what it is though and I couldn't find anyone that was prepared to discount it to any great degree...

Having said that though I've decided to go with a custom built stand...

I like the idea of using the 70 stand with the 60. I am concerned that it might look silly if it had a smaller base not fitting into the larger carved out bit for the 70 though? Or does the 60 and 70 have the exact same size base?

I don't believe the base is the same size between the 60" & 70". I think I've seen somewhere dimensions for them and 70" is slightly larger. Unfortunately I can't confirm how it would look as I didn't end up going down this path. I guess the only thing to note is that the front bit of the stand is a little slide on panel that goes over the front foot of the TV (if that makes sense). So while looking from the front I'm not sure that you would notice even if the cutout were a bit larger.

The manual for the stand can be found at http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-doc...RS51U&LOC=3 which gives instructions for both the 60" & 70" and may help you in deciding.

I have an Oz Design Furniture low line stand called the "Neo" Check my tag out for photos.

It's not on Oz Design Furnitures' website anymore, but I found it listed here on page 7 (link may take a while to load)... http://www.ozdesignfurniture.com.au/conten...4/catalogue.pdf (catalogue for sale between 11/8/06 until 28/2/07).

You might want to ring up a few Oz Design Furniture stores to see if they still have any left.

Picked mine up for $360 at the Werribee branch.

Had to put it together myself, but as you can see, it's a beautiful stand with plenty of room.

Hi everyone,

Just an update. After much scouting around have now purchased a lowline entertainment unit from Harvey Norman for our 70 incher.

It's imported by a company called Modern Line Furniture (located in Sunshine, Victoria) who supply it exclusively to Harvey Norman stores (definitely in Melbourne, but not sure about other states).

Called the Regal, it's made from hardwood timber, and comes in a choice of colours. The stores we checked all had the "coffee" colour (medium to dark tone - a very slight reddish tinge to the stain finish). RRP $799.99 but I was able to get three Harvey Norman Stores (Bell Street Preston/Chadstone/Maribyrnong - opposite Highpoint) to knock $100 off. We bought the display model at Preston. Chadstone has one available - again a display model - for those needing one immediately. Otherwise I think it takes a couple of weeks if you order them. Maribyrnong store did not have them in stock but said they would match the $699.99 price.

The dimensions are: L2000 x H470 x D540 (incidentally, I took a tape measure with me to check and I found the height to be 48cm).

All our lounge room furniture is Tassie Oak in a medium to dark colour (has a slight orangy tinge to the shade) so this unit was a perfect match for us. It's also a medium to dark colour with a reddish tone to it (but by no means red in colour).

It's a very simple and stylish looking unit and being made of hardwood was of better quality than the veneer units we'd seen for around $499.00.

The unit has two drawers on tracks either side and the middle section is open, with one slide-out-shelf (in effect providing two spaces: one above and one below for equipment).

At first we did not think it would have enough openings for our bits and pieces. But on further investigation we pulled out the two bottom drawers and figured that if we unscrewed the side tracks on the inner walls that the drawer runs on we could use those as shelves. We will also modify the back of the unit by drilling holes for ventilation with a hole cutter - a small adjustment we felt. As the unit is only 48cm high the dimensions of the open section above and below the slide-out-shelf are not huge so we were not sure if the centre speaker of our surround system would fit. Luckily, though, we have the option of unscrewing the inner side tracks housing the slide-out-shelf and can reposition this a bit lower if necessary.

All in all, we are really happy with our purchase and feel we ended up with a unit at a good price with all features needed for the 70 incher (not an easy find as most units are a lot higher than this one and hardwood timber are often in excess of $1000).

The girl who helped us at Harvey Norman in Preston was Stephanie - very helpful.

Hope that helps others. We purchased the unit last night and HN are delivering it today ($50 for delivery from Preston to Prahran). TV is arriving Tuesday next week and we have a technician coming to set it all up....woohoo...can't wait!

Cheers,

ozgal

Hi Ralfi,

Wow, there are some really great threads here. You've got yourself a great looking stand for a great price, too. Congrats.

If you get the chance to post some pics when it is all set up that would be great.

Try Going Going Gone on Victoria Street Abbotsford... click the link in my sig to see the stand I got from there.

Up the road are some other very nice stands from Oriental Express... Asian inspired furniture that's very sturdy if that tickles ya fancy. Or else you could just go down the road to Freedom and Ikea in Victoria Gardens... and then there are 2-3 more large furniture stores next to Vic Gardens on Burnley...all these shops are within 1km of each other making it easy to compare in the 1 arvo.

Hi Croops,

Some great suggestions and took a peek at your pics. Lovely set up!

I've been talking to the guys at the Bluegum joinery and they've been fantastic. Really helpful (although I think I'm driving them crazy with my indecision !). They are probably a little on the pricey side as all materials and labour are local so they can't compete with the cheap imports, but they do give you the option of customising the cabinet to whatever you want.

Another place that does custom cabinets is http://www.cibodesign.com.au/audiovisual.html I've spoken to Matt on the phone and he's been really helpful, but again it's not cheap...

Hi there dj147,

Good luck with your hunt for a suitable lowline unit. Thankfully we finally located one we were happy with and it has now been delivered. Just waiting for the arrival of our new 70" early next week.

Thanks also for the links you provided. The second one definitely has some plush designs. As you mention, they probably won't suit those after a budget solution - but they certainly look very elegant and would suit modern, contemporary settings.

Hope it all goes well for you.

Cheers,

Hi there,

Sorry for delay in posting picture of sxrd 70"setup on the lowline cabinet we purchased from Harvey Norman. Very pleased with it. We took out bottom left and right drawers and removed the side tracks the drawers would have moved along, to allow for our equipment to fit in. I just need to stain along the inner sides where the tracks were. It's very solid and cost $699.00, which was around $200 more than the cheaper products, and around $600.00 cheaper than the higher priced units - usually more contemporary in style.

Here's a link to a picture of our setup.

Cheers and good luck to others with their lowline purchases.
