charlesc Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 I missed the start of this program last night, about the first Qantas Boeing 707. Does anyone have the whole show please?
FMB Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 It was actually on Seven and it wasn't that great. You didn't miss much.
j0hn Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 I missed the start of this program last night, about the first Qantas Boeing 707.Does anyone have the whole show please? Yeah I've got it.
Santa1503559644 Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Didn't expect much. So I wasn't too disappointed. What I did like was that they included the famous barrel rolls footage ... they were the stuff of legend. Didn't mind the relaxed commentary. All in all, better than I expected. Austen can probably better comment on the performance of the volunteers, but a pretty decent job if you ask me.
charlesc Posted April 5, 2007 Author Posted April 5, 2007 It was actually on Seven...Of course, my mistake. I knew that, I just typed the wrong thing Thanks jOhn, I'll PM.
gtr73 Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Some of the volunteers were from Boeing Australia's operations at Amberley Air Base in Queensland, where they do deep level maintenance for the RAAF's B707 fleet (of four aircraft, yes they still fly them). Some people were "supplied" from Qantas also. I laughed when I noticed Boeing made sure to park one of the latest model B737 demonstrators beside the 707 when in England, so it got in a few camera shots.
FMB Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Please don't misunderstand my earlier comment. My hat goes off to the volunteers. I thought they did a fantastic job and are to be congratulated. I just thought the way it was presented could have done with a bit more polish to make it more interesting and entertaining. Perhaps it should have been on the ABC. They may have done it better. I had never seen the barrel roll footage before. I just said to my wife "You can't do a barrel roll in a 707!!!"

I dunno ... if it were on the ABC, it could have had: *(On Catalyst) - silly, inane graphics and constant childish SFX (beeping, whiring, chirping...). *(On a separate docudrama) - ridiculous costume drama antics with the cast proclaiming such gems as "Ah, my good man, I'll show you! This bird'll take to them skies like a gallah to the stage!" ... BTW - WRT the roll ... the commentary was a little misleading in almost implying the roll was at 300 ft ... now that would have been an impossibility! (It lost enough height as it was).
mtv Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Yeah... I noticed the 300ft reference too. I guess it was referring only to the low-pass. BTW... a 747 can also do a roll.
FMB Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Yeah... I noticed the 300ft reference too. I guess it was referring only to the low-pass.BTW... a 747 can also do a roll. Maybe, but you sure as heck wouldn't want to be in it when it did.
Timmy Downawell Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 I noticed all the intro/outro clips (whatever you call them) were actually of the plane in question's sister ship (the one owned by John Travolta, with the red "V-Jet" tail fin, rather than the Qantas one). A bit lazy/sloppy of them to repeatedly feature the wrong plane like that all the way through the show. I doubt the ABC would have got that wrong.
Wing Nut Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Coincidentally on Ch10 news this morning, John Travolta had an inflight 'emergency' and had to divert (to Ireland?). The media reported something along the lines of 'he was very pleased to be on the ground'. Which can mean anything from an engine fire enroute to a coffee machine failed mid-Atlantic Missed the start too ... damn!
KernelPanic Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 It was dummed down a little too much. It would have been better to know more of the technical details of the buildup.. but definitely better than 99% of the other crap on tv!

Dont think there was much of an emergency. Spares are a little slow to come by, as mentioned in the doco, these days, though!

Yeah ... pretty light on, but then again, if it had more of the stuff we'd probably like, the audience figures would plunge!

Whilst I've heard the odd rumour, I cant recall any actual 747 barrel rolls - unlike the legendary 707 manoevre. Technically, plenty of aircraft can do the roll. Whether you can get away with it is another matter entirely!

A bit lazy/sloppy of them to repeatedly feature the wrong plane like that all the way through the show. I doubt the ABC would have got that wrong. I dont think they were deliberately trying to deceive - I think they'd assume it was obvious that it was a different aircraft. Trivia: In case anyone was wondering where the "V" in the "V-Jet" came from... the (arcane) reason was that "V" stood for "vannus" in Latin - and QANTAS were keen to point out (in a rather wierd way) that the engines were (relatively) quieter turbofans, as opposed to the old turbojets.
GTO Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 I guess there's always something else you want to see. I would have liked to have seen some "before & after" images, of the exterior, interior, cockpit etc-also a bit more details on the engines-what work was needed on them etc. But, generally, I thought it was ok--I guess when the plane flys to Longreach, that'll be its last flight. Cheers, GTO.

The rumour is that QANTAS are stuffing the longreach museum around and possibly want to gain some more exposure from their former 707.

Hadn't heard that one (the practice approach sounds a bit fishy, but who knows these days). I couldn't possibly comment on QANTAS ... and I note a certain member's absence as all hell breaks loose yet again in the wonderful world of censored

I remember when it arrived in Australia on the news item they actually stated they weren't allowed to shoot inside for some reason. Perhaps I was watching Channel Nine news.

The rumour is that QANTAS are stuffing the longreach museum around and possibly want to gain some more exposure from their former 707. It’s going up on Saturday for a fly pass ONLY - can't land for certain reasons. It will move up permanently latter this year. The Captain was my ‘next door’ for 6 years. The only reason it got here is the $1 million the goverment put in. There was also other engine problems after the first flight, but the trip was pretty much as the doco shows. I think the TV show was done by the narrator’s company and sold to 7, or a co-pro with 7. He’s done things like this before and while he’s good at his facts etc, I think 7 handicaps his budget. Quote ‘there’s no ratings (money) in aircraft shows’, even thou air shows are number 2 or 3 in people attending in the USA?
Timmy Downawell Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 Quote ‘there’s no ratings (money) in aircraft shows’ That's ironic given the big audiences Seven gets for Air Crash Investigations.
kootaberra Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 That's ironic given the big audiences Seven gets for Air Crash Investigations. true, but its the crashes that attract the ghouls, not a straight air show.
Timmy Downawell Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 true, but its the crashes that attract the ghouls, not a straight air show. I know, that's why many people watch motor racing/F1 etc. At least with Air Crash Investigations, it's the process of the investigation and what they discover that is interesting (at least to me). Personally I'm amazed that they still haven't recovered the black boxes from that Adam Air flight that crashed into the sea on January 1st. But that's a whole other story.
