The current JB Hi-Fi catalogue has a whole page devoted to flogging 1080p HD LCD panels from Sharp, Samsung and of course Cloudy.. err I mean Sony. And the heading on that page reads:

1080p - THE ULTIMATE PICTURE, IT'S BETTER THAN HD!"

Funny - last time I checked, 1080p *was* HD

Looks like I won't be buying from them in the future :P

Their advertising Committee doesn't know anything "true", hence their employees probably don't know anything at all :D:P

The truth is often SMASHED!!!!! by JB.

Enough of this MADNESS!!!!, I say.

But still amusing (and slightly scary) about the lack of technical knowledge displayed... :P

Similar thing happened with alcohol shop's ad in the daily telegraph yesterday, it said, "$31 with voucher, $28 without voucher", the 28 and 31 need to be swapped, should walk in and say I'd like this for $28 without the voucher, show the ad and you're laughing

yeh i like the current JB's catalogue that says

"FULL HD DVD PLAYER & RECEIVERS NOW AT JB"

so i started frothing at the mouth thinking of one of the Toshi HD-DVD players but of course its the Sammy Bluray player they are talking about.

I guess one could assume that they are refering to our DTV at 1080i, but even so, its still totally silly and assumes that the person writing it even knows that some local DTV is 1080i, which I doubt they do.

Yes, it couldn't be anything else, since Sony have 'paid off' JB to be a Blu ray only shop, I wonder if thats what they mean by letting the 'market' decide

Ads like this are simply an intention to treat, thus they don't have to accept your offer of $28 without the voucher if they don't want to.

I would love one cent for every (paper) catalogue that has been printed with half a page of "HD Ready" 850x480 Plasmas.

Some of those even have built-in HD tuners. 850 is better than 720, right?

Look, JB's customers don't want wise-arse braniacs like you telling them that their new huge mega_TV isn't really HD.

They don't want to know that it won't enhance Funniest Home Videos, Biggest Loser, or "Ow, My Balls!".

They want smooth-talking salesmen telling the what good taste they have. You are not the JB target market, so stop being such a spoil-sport.

Thats because there is no technology yet invented that can 'enhance' most of the crap that passes for TV these days.

Next from JB, 'HD compatible' 34cm 4:3 CRT screens :P .

Don't laugh - went to Good Guys recently to buy a slow cooker and checked their TV section while they were in there - they had the 7 HD loop (still 576 in Bris) running on the CRT sets. Kid you not.

At the DFO at the airport in the Sony Clearance Store they had a couple of CRT sets in the window labelled "HD Ready" then in small letters "576p only".

Who can you trust if not Sony.

Someone's done a little bit of commercial law I see.

But you're spot on, they don't have to honor the catalogue as it's presented. Usually businesses do honour catalogues however, in the interests of good customer relations, it's when they blatantly try to deceive that grates me. A recent example being the intro of Vista - everywhere advertising said upgrade to Vista for as little as $179 (or whatever it was). How many people got home, tried to load it up and crashed their PC I wonder?

I was in JB @ Knox today at lunch time and had a look at their BluRay Disc collection - frankly it was woefull and consisted of less than 10 titles! I also couldn't find a single BD player setup anywhere - So much for JB heavily promoting BD

In their defence i can kinda understand what they mean though.

High definition being 720p and 1080i.

just my 2 cents.

I can see why they got rid of 2c coins.

What resolutions they use for digital TV HD channels is not what sets the standard for what a HD resolution is.

I didnt say i agreed with what they were saying, merely i can see where they are coming from.

Not many people would understand what full HD means and thus saying better than high defintion while wrong gets the same kinda message across, that being its better than the current HD panels available.

just my 5 cents

Why wouldn't they?

All my local JBs have very knowledgeable staff who would know that 1080p is slightly better that 1080i.

I don't think it's worth a huge headline like they've done in the catalogue, but going off most of the JB staff i've talked to (yes, there are some not-so-helpful staff, but they'd still be a few levels above those of HN), it'd make sense that they knew what they were on about.

Is all this JB bagging due to particular incident/s from the past? Because i've been shopping there for years & i'd say 90% of the staff are very helpful. Add that to their prices & no one else compares.

The only thing that's pissed me off about JBs is that they've added cheap & nasty brands from Asia to their range, whereas about ten years ago, they pretty much stocked quality across the board.

It doesn't bother me too much though - so long as I keep doing my homework & know who to talk to, I don't see me shopping elsewhere for all/most of my electrical needs.

Oh & they've just opened another branch at my nearest shopping centre last weekend.

I'm not bagging JB, I'm bagging whoever put the catalogue together.

Fact remains, 1080p is HD. If their headline said "it's better than HDTV" that would be accurate. As it stands, it's not.

Cheap and nasty like that Sony HD PVR, you mean?

Seriously, though, it's just supply and demand. Joe Public wants an LCD TV but can't afford the big bucks demanded by the big manufacturers, but offer him something $1000 or more cheaper and it's a deal.

You can I wouldn't go near the things, but some people don't care about quality.
