jrisles Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 OK guys a question for you all As i understand it HDMI outputs both Video AND Audio? So if you have a receiver or processor that can accept HDMI then you don't need to use any other output is this correct? Even SACD & DVD-A can be outputted via HDMI but any of the digital outs like Optical or Coax cannot output SACD or DVD-A? Is this correct? Now if i don't use the HDMI connection for Audio but use it merely to send the video signal directly to my LCD screen i need to use the 6 channel output of this DVD player to my Processor to get the audio effect of the DVD? Now what about 2ch. Can i still use the 6ch output to listen to normal CD's? I mean i don't need to have both the 6ch outs of the DVD player connected to my Processor as well as connect my Coax digital out do i?? I am trying to work out the best way to connect this DVD player to my Sherwood Processor. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance regards Jeff
MELso Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 SACD can only be output via the analog outputs... DVD-A can only be output via HDMI and analog outputs. PCM, Dolby and DTS can be sent over coax, optical, HDMI and analog outputs.
jrisles Posted April 4, 2007 Author Posted April 4, 2007 Thx 4 the speedy reply. The information found in the following link tends to suggest that HDMI can send both DVD-A & SACD via HDMI provided your rx'er or processor support HDMI 1.1 or greater. Or am i not reading this correctly? Pioneer FAQ What about 2ch though would it be best to use the 6ch analogue outputs to listen to 2ch?

Ive got a 989 jeff and its hdmi ver1.1 ;this can take dvd audio but not sacd ;ver1.2 is required unfortunately for sacd.Rather than use the d/a converters of your 696 Ide use the superior d/acs of your sherwood pre.Because this means a coax or optical input you gain the superior bass management of the sherwood for regular dvd's .If your sherwood can apply bass management to the 6 channel analog input [ after a/d conversion] you have a choice where bass management for dvd audio/sacd is performed.
