Hi everyone,

Is there a post dedicated to discussing the networks' plans for expanding their HD programming? (Yes, HD as it currently is is fine by me... discussions about whether it's true / ideal HD all go over my head anyway. I like the HD that's being transmitted by the networks at the moment, and want to know when more of their programs will be in HD.)

Sorry... I KNOW there must be at least one thread covering this already, but I've searched for quite a while and can't seem to find it.

Cheers.

I really think this could be the year HD really starts to grow. One reason TEN HD doing sport. As someone said in another thread people will get HD for HD sport, now TEN is taking the lead the other networks should follow, trying to leap frog each other. More HD content is going to win the day, and I hope it gets to the stage soon of nearly every sport being HD like in the US.

Yes Channel 10 really seem to be setting the bar and well done to them - let's hope that the other stations can follow their lead.

Where do you learn this stuff? How do I find out what's in store? Also, where would I find out if/when the networks would be changing the bit rates of particular programs? (I've heard this may be a contributor to my PQ problems for The Biggest Loser, and I assume this reason would also apply to Bondi Rescue and Ready Steady Cook, amongst others.)

Cheers.

Besides this one? Basically no. The networks play their cards very close to their chest and in the digital arena its almost impossible to work out what is 'coming'. At the moment networks seem content to say digital (SD or HD) is just analogue in a different format. Do the bare minimum and its business as usual. Legislation has mandated minimum HD content and they've managed to meet this requirement. Although why 2 hours of Bert Newton in HD is acceptable beats me. Basically as the world/US transitions over to HD more and more stuff will be filmed in HD format. There doesn't seem to be a premium placed on this yet (as in Channel 7 you can buy Heroes in SD for 1 mill or HD for 2 mill) as networks just buy the show and broadcast it. This may change. Its also interesting that networks are now allowed to multicast on the HD channel - ie they can broadcast something on SD and something different on HD. How this effects things is unknown but for the moment it has had 0 effect .

Net opinion is that whatever HD you're going to get is determined by factors way beyond your influence. It is coming, it will come in steadily larger amounts, but for the time being just ejoy a HD show as it pops up :D

We're really only just getting started. Most programming is still SD widescreen - but the world is all going HD.

Personally I think the HD ratio is already very good, at least in respect to the programs that I would say are actually worth watching. I mean, nearly all of the blue-chip prime-time US productions are in HD on Nine and Ten. And a good swag of prime time movies. If Seven goes through with this 1080i caper, it'll be the same deal with them, and all of my regular viewing will be HD. Except sport.

I think things are looking up on the sport front though. If Seven do go 1080i permanently, I will put the house on Friday Night Football being HD next year. Not sure about the cricket though: the Ashes were a golden opportunity that went begging.

Thanks guys. Appreciate your responses. In case you're wondering, I asked 'cos I'm having some PQ problems with my LG 50PC3D with SOME SD signal. I'm considering upgrading to a Panasonic PX600a, and I'm just tyring to figure out if it's worth the hassle...

SD & HD are sent in the same stream of data. Its not like one can have interference and the other not - that's a bit like saying the left side of channel 7 gets interference  SD is also broadcast in the same format by everyone (576i), whereas HD has a variety of formats. Traditionally HD is more prone to 'issues' simply because its 4 times the data and units can sometimes have issues decoding it.

I get what you're saying. I didn't know this, so it looks like I'm just describing the problem incorrectly. It's definitely not happening when I'm watching HD programs, and it's definitely happening when I'm watching some SD programs like the Biggest Loser (even when watching it on the HD channel). I heard someone else was having slightly different issues with the Biggest Loser and someone said it was to do with the bitrate?

It also happens on SOME video clips on Rage, for instance (and probably Video Hits).

In any event, it's a moot point from my perspective now. I've just negotiated a partial refund from JB Hi Fi on the LG 50PC3D, and I'm replacing it with a Panasonic TH50-PX600a.

Thanks again for your help.

Cheers.
