5.1 Analoge Vs Digital Optical , Coaxel

Recommended Posts

At presant I have at sony stereo with 5.1 input , output & a optical out ( yes optical out, God knows why I don't )

What I'm wondering IS IF the sound difference between 5.1 & DTS is that great that it is worth buying a stand alone amp that

has digital optical, coaxel inputs to connect up to my stereos speakers

Model No , Sony LBT-XGR90AV

Any opinions would be appreciated

I find optical is much better sound wise, and you've got the benefit of being able to plug in other things to that optical connection, by unplugging from the main device and plugging into another device, whereas 5.1 analogue input can only have 5.1 being input from something with a DD Decoder on board.

Depends on the decoders in the equipment and only your ears can tell that

- if the players are better than the amp, use 5.1 connections

- if the amps are better than the player, use coax or optical

And what if they are equal?

Then you need an ear test :P:D
That's a certainty! :P

Thanks for the feed back guys

Can you buy a decoder that has optical & coaxel in , & at least some of the listed encodes out into 5.1 --- so I could plug it into my existing amp.

If not any suggestions on a bugget amp would help as there are sooo many out there.

I don't think I can detect a difference between optical and coax.

Wrt DTS it is MHO that DTS is much better than DD and well worth it.

If you have a good co-coax lead and a good optical connection, then there should not be any difference (in theory), it's only data.

Some professionals favour co-coax if they move plugs around. This is because if you get dust into the optical connectors, it can cause data break-up.

What I am after is a good audio decoder with optical & coaxel inputs , 2 of each would be nice, & 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 out.

It dosen't have to have a builded in amp or video input or output.

Thanks for your help

What you ask for doesnt exist anymore uhf 2.Before dolby digital became standard in amps I had an onkyo processor that had 1 coax/1 optical sp difs and a 5.1 muti analog out for the amp ;but didnt even have dts.A entry level yamaha may suit -best to audition before buying :P The optical out by the way is for dubbing to the sony minidisc player you dont need :D
