djOS Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 Firmware Update Version: 2.1 Applicable Models: HD-XA1, HD-A1 and HD-D1. Overview: This firmware update adds support for certain anticipated network delivered content in future HD DVD discs, improves certain video and audio processing capabilities, as well as addresses certain disc playback and HDMI/DVI related problems identified by Toshiba. How to obtain and install the firmware update: If you have broadband internet service, you may obtain the firmware update over the internet using the Ethernet port on the back of your HD DVD Player. There are instructions for configuring the Ethernet port on pages 44-45 of the owner's manual. Page 57 of the owner's manual describes how to download the firmware update. Here is an overview of the process: * BEFORE BEGINNING THE FIRMWARE UPDATE PROCESS, BE SURE TO REMOVE ANY DISCS FROM YOUR HD DVD PLAYER. * Please configure the Ethernet port. You may need to turn on DHCP and DNS. Page 45 of the user manual explains how to do this. * After you have configured the Ethernet port, follow the directions on page 57 to check for a firmware update. * If a firmware update is available for your player, it will take about 20 minutes to download and install. Once the firmware update download process has finished, the player's power will automatically switch off. You must wait until this process has finished. * DO NOT UNPLUG, TURN OFF, OR USE ANY OTHER FEATURE OF YOUR PLAYER DURING THE FIRMWARE UPDATE PROCESS. Doing so will cause the writing of the firmware update to the player to be halted and the player may no longer operate properly. If the player stops working, please contact Toshiba Customer Solutions at (800) 319-6684. * If no firmware update is available, the player will quickly exit the update process. * Please refer to your owner's manual for additional details. If you do not have an Ethernet-based broadband connection for your player or prefer not to use one, you may contact Toshiba Customer Solutions and request that a firmware update disc be sent by mail. * You can update the firmware using this update disc by following the instructions provided with the disc. Please note that if you sent Toshiba the Firmware Update Request card included with your player, you will receive an update disc by mail from Toshiba as soon as it becomes available. djOS Posted April 3, 2007 Author Posted April 3, 2007 Will there be an ISO for download anywhere? I haven't seen it posted yet, If I do I'll post a link to it. So far my network DL is progressing nicely and is up to 30% over a 1.5Mb connecton (in 30mins).
mgoldsmith Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 Are you still required to go through a US proxy server to D/L this one if you are in Oz? Matt.G DVDown Under
Cody Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 hmm, i can already feel a knot in my stomach developing at the thought of another round of russian firmware roulette...
betty boop Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 good to see tosh back supporting their hd-dvd players with firmware updates. I'll have to wait for the iso I think.
djOS Posted April 4, 2007 Author Posted April 4, 2007 Are you still required to go through a US proxy server to D/L this one if you are in Oz? Matt.G DVDown Under No and AFAIK this has never been the case. Btw chaps, my upgrade took about 45mins and worked perfectly using the internet (1.5Mbps ADSL) - when I get home tonight I'll test it on Serenity (It was either Serenity or Aeon Flux, I cant remember which ) as on v2.0 there was a replicable glitch & audio sync issue very early in the movie.
Maverick Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 No and AFAIK this has never been the case.Btw chaps, my upgrade took about 45mins and worked perfectly using the internet (1.5Mbps ADSL) - when I get home tonight I'll test it on Serenity (It was either Serenity or Aeon Flux, I cant remember which ) as on v2.0 there was a replicable glitch & audio sync issue very early in the movie. djOS Posted April 4, 2007 Author Posted April 4, 2007 It was Serenity. Thanks Mav, my memory isn't as bad as I thought.
AndrewW Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 It was Serenity. It definitely was, and the chance of fixing this is enough to make me risk doing the upgrade. Andrew.
brooksy Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 Yep, Serenity has the audio glitch/loss of sync for me to. Its right about when the Serenity crew returns to safe haven(? the place where the preacher lives) only to find it "a bit messed up". I'm also hoping this fw upgrade fixes my Miami Vice playback issues. I had a lot of stuttering problems after half way through the movie. Echoing Al's comment, it's great to see Tosh hasn't forgotten about us first gen owners. Bravo!
OzHTfan Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 Wonder if it might of fixed my flaked out HD-A1. I doubt it somehow actually. Moot point for me now though since I got the XA2:).
djOS Posted April 4, 2007 Author Posted April 4, 2007 Cmon guy's, I did say it took about 30mins to get to 30% and 45mins to complete so it is obviously non-linear. Just start the update and go watch an hours worth of TV before checking it - most of the upgrade issues ppl have are due to ppl interfering with the upgrade process!
djOS Posted April 4, 2007 Author Posted April 4, 2007 after 10 mins it didn't move from 0%. i have a 2 year old and while attending to my business i was worried she would change input on the amp or turn the tv off ruining the hdmi link. too scary Mine sat at 0% for ages too. Btw folks, you can change the inputs on your AVR and watch TV etc without affecting the upgrade process. I realise im slightly mad for trying it, but even tho Im using HDMI only for my HD DVD player, I was successfully able to switch over to my PVR input on the AVR without any HDMI handshaking issues killing the upgrade process.
brooksy Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 Hey djOS, Are you using the analogue 5.1 outs? Any word on if the subwoofer level or test tone has been fixed?
djOS Posted April 4, 2007 Author Posted April 4, 2007 thats as brave as me turning mine off True enuf.
djOS Posted April 4, 2007 Author Posted April 4, 2007 Hey djOS,Are you using the analogue 5.1 outs? Any word on if the subwoofer level or test tone has been fixed? No im using HDMI all the way and I haven't heard of any updates to the analogue 5.1 levels issue.
betty boop Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 phew indeed, glad to hear its ok!i think i'll wait for the ISO as well... yes I think I'll wait up for the iso. suprised it hasnt shown up on avs as yet.
IanD1503559705 Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 yes I think I'll wait up for the iso. suprised it hasnt shown up on avs as yet. On AVS Forum I think they are saying about 2-3 weeks before Toshiba issue firmware upgrade discs. Until that happens and someone can rip to an ISO, I don't think we will see any internet distribution. Why Toshiba don't make an ISO available to download from their website is beyond my understanding.

Well lads the results are in and they GREAT!!!! The glitch right in the scene where the "government agent" is grilling the "prideful scientist" not long before killing him in Serenity is no more and there are no Audio Sync errors anymore either! Great Job Toshiba!
brooksy Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 Funny, i've never had a problem with that scene. Have you ever lost audio sync in the scene i described a couple of posts back?
djOS Posted April 4, 2007 Author Posted April 4, 2007 Funny, i've never had a problem with that scene. Have you ever lost audio sync in the scene i described a couple of posts back? yep and that doesn't happen anymore either.

djOS Posted April 4, 2007 Author Posted April 4, 2007 Btw folks, I'm not sure if it is my imagination, but Serenity seemed to look sharper and more 3D after the update - can someone else update their HD-X/A1 and confirm if this is true?
AndrewW Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 yep and that doesn't happen anymore either. this is great news. time to risk the internet update Andrew.
