forester_gump Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 Hi all, It seems that my PAL (Aussie) console is much louder than the Jap NTSC console that I previously owned. The fan steps up almost immediately after power up and stays that way until shutdown whereas the Jap console was as quiet as a mouse and only intermittently increased fan speed... It reminds me of the 360 and is really putting me off.... whilst browsing I came across this: http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=64858 I think I have an issue here... I PM'ed tinsanta (works for TRU) whom frequented this forum just after the PS3 launch and highlighted the issue...I advised that I will be taking the console back to TRU for a changeover....am still awaiting a response.... Any other PAL owners experiencing this '360' like symptom??

bort Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 Sounds like Mav was reporting the same issue. No problems with mine so far - very quiet.

Felix.. Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 My Aussie PS3 does make some fan noise after it has been on for a while but at noticeably lower levels than the 360. It also makes more a light whoosh where as my 360 makes an annoying whine that is far more distracting I find.
ejm Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 The fan on mine only becomes audible after around an hour of playing games and even then it is no where near as loud as my 360. Your console may be faulty if it is as loud as the 360.

While Tinsanta made his employment known to all, I dont think it fair he should be expected to organise a return. He would be a member of this forum for the same reasons as the rest of us, a passion for this industry. If you are concerned about the noise level, take it back to them, Im sure they will understand.

MarkH, I understand the point that you are trying to make but let's be clear on a couple of matters....where in my post do I indicate that i expect tinsanta to organise the return?? and..although I hear what you are saying about tinsanta's motivation for being a forum member, the moment that tinsanta disclosed to this forum that 'she' and 'we' (TRU) are interested in feedback for future deals (http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=47988&hl=) and other forum members commenting on their satisfaction or dissatisfaction with cust service levels at TRU, I think I am justified in sending a PM to tinsanta... why don't we just keep on topic (i.e commenting on noise issue) than turning everything into a morality lesson!!

After reading the post, i have to agree with Forester. Regarding the noise issue, to me, as I don't have a NTSC version etc...there's no comparision, and my xbox360 is just as noisy!! so, no worries to me. (sometimes, how wonderful when you dont have comparison )
timbo333 Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Can't say i have noticed any undue 'noise' coming from my PS3 (PAL). Maybe some have not had their fan seated correctly or tightened properly?

If I misinterpreted your comments, I apologise, but then perhaps you couldve worded it better. You mentioned you were waiting on a reply from him, which seem to suggest you were expecting him to help in the return. We dont actually know tinsanta' position within TRU. Getting this thread back on topic as you say I have a Japanese console which is whisper quiet, even after hours of prolonged use (I left it on last night as a test).
nightbreed Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 I would say my PS3 is roughly about 1/3 the volume of my 360. I would never use my xbox360 as my HD DVD player, just TOO damm loud!!
Maverick Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Just out of interest do you guys have your PS3's standing vertical or laying down?
momaw Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Just out of interest do you guys have your PS3's standing vertical or laying down? Mine is laying down and quiter than the hum of my Pioneer DVD recorder. Now if only it didn't get so damn hot. I think it gets hotter than a grill
mrfish Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 vertical for me. I actually like this shiny black thing over my 360, like a piece of comtemp art.
Hydrology Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Currently lying down, although Im looking for locations to hide the f****r, its fugly!
momaw Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Currently lying down, although Im looking for locations to hide the f****r, its fugly! I agree, if it was half the size it might look nice. Or is it had that nice finish in white it could look interesting. I have mine in the side cupboard. At least that way when I am using the Bluetooth remote because it won't work with my harmony I don't feel so ripped off.

I thought about putting mine in a cabinet but it generates so much heat that I think it would cook itself in no time.

Stick it in the beer frig. .....and bring the cables out through a big grommet in the side......oh ! and don't forget to turn on the frig. C.M
nightbreed Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 mine is upright. You really can't even touch these things, i'm sure it would scratch if you breathed on it
brodricj Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 My P3 is quite noisy also, although I haven't seen/heard another PS3 to compare it against so hadn't picked it as an issue. My PS3 is in a rack enclosure about 7m away from the main viewing position, which is directly below my PE8720 projector. The PS3 fan noise is audible above the projector fan noise, despite it being in an enclosure and 6m further away.
Tweet Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 How many Kilowatts do these things use ? Surely anything that gets that hot that it can't be touched is going to develop problems sometime in the future. What is the warranty on the PS3 ? .....1 year ? C.M
Chesty Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 My HK PS3 is damn quiet. I cant hear it at all. Although agreed it does run hot.
