davidols Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 Hi everyone, I've been tossing up between the pioneer 50inch (507) and the Panasonic 50inch (PX600A). Now I know the pioneer has a 5 year warranty standard, and that its great with a replacement TV and pickup/drop-off/install at your home (and it’s not just bulls**t promises, I know someone who has gone through the process and they said its good). For the Panasonic, there is only 1 year standard warranty, thus you need to purchase some extended warranty from the store. Are these all fairly similar ? Or do some stores offer an inferior warranty that has some conditions that will not cover some things that others will. Also how well do the stores stand by you as the customer, I'd imagine Myer and DJ's would be very good as they are large companies that are not franchised. Whereas HN and others are franchise and they may just say p**s-off, we have your money, just deal with the company we outsource the warranty to. Any experiences or opinions greatly appreciated Thanks - David
Scalpel Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 It would be a great resource to get scans of the various retailers warranty 'terms and conditions' and keep them on the board as a reference. (several of them will come from the same insurer source). Anyone interested ?? I think i have a HN one - i will have to go and have a look to see what is actually in one. J. With regards to the original poster - Most of the warranty providers are 3rd party insurers - this doesnt seem to relate to whether the seller is a franchisee or not. Sometimes the situation is a bit odd - eg Bing Lee (who seem to own the Sony Chatswood Store) actively try to steer the customer away from the Sony warranty and supply the 'Bing Lee' one instead (which is cheaper). PS: READ the conditions carefully
Heiser202 Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 NARTA all the way. With mine recently I was able to cancel as i sold the tv and I got half the warranty back. $400

Myer Product Cover extended warranties relative to TVs 3 or 5yr cover, includes 3 repairs, 4th repair replacement (to original value) lemon policy and transferable if sold. Also covers WEAR AND TEAR. If the remote wears out during the 5 years from overuse or poor quality (re Samsung and some LG remotes) it IS covered. (NB: iPods, the battery is covered.) Most extended warranties exclude regular wear and tear, and will be deducted from the payout, or make the warranty null and void. Underwritten by AIG, A+ credit rating. Even if Myer disappear, you are still covered. (A+ is same as banks where insurer has to have capital in trust to cover claims) Grab the terms and conditions booklet and any Myer electrical counter. HN don't offer that. A HN extended warranty is based on the aggregate system. Buy a Panasonic for$3500 and thats the maximum they cover. So if they do 2 repairs for $600 each, the $1200 comes off the $3500. If they can't fix it, they give you a cheque for UP TO $2300. If you had $2500 worth of repairs, they give you a cheque for up to $1000 to buy a new tv. It's also underwritten by HN, so if HN had financial problems, your warranty is worthless. (This is important when dealing with small companies, anyone remember Brashes??)

When you get the Panasonic plasma, you also get an extended warranty form from the manufacture , found in the box with the manual. You can purchase the extended warranty from Panasonic at any time until it is a year old from date of purchase.

You can do much better than that, and some retailers have better warranties. (Lemon Policy, Wear and tear, transferable, etc)

(Lemon Policy, Wear and tear, transferable, etc) It is true that it is more expensive and you could get a better deal with a third party extended warranty. But some people prefer the manufacture warranty. Also you don't have to come up with all the costs at once. You get a year to purchase.

So it looks like the extra 100 dollars is worth it for the better myer warranty ?

I'm essentially thinking the same thing... most pricing is pretty competitive between retailers so my decision will be based on the quality of the extended warranty. Anyone have any thoughts on the David Jones warranty?
