I tried to support your initiative - against my preference Mel - :D

Thank you Aloy ...its worth a shot :P

Most economists believe the official cash rate will go up by 0.25 per cent to 6.5 per cent on the back of strong retail and housing figures.

So how can any government deliver a good economy and keep interest rates down.....we all know one government who can claim both...but is it economically possible?

Not an economist but I think the interest rate is going up because the economy is doing a little too well.

From the several years of let's say relatively stable growth it would appear that the interest rate mechanism, which is overseen by an independent Reserve bank on fairly strict guidelines, is working very well.

Relatively small changes in interest rates up or down are a stabilising system IMO

How about this:

We can't enforce Hicks media gag: Ruddock

http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200704/s1889044.htm

Comment:

If this is the case - how silly is the theory espoused by jangly commentators that the Australian Government told the American military to gag David Hicks?

Sydney Morning Herald

Quote:

We can't enforce Hicks gag: Ruddock

Tom Allard National Security Editor and AAP

April 4, 2007

THE gag on David Hicks speaking to the media for 12 months would not be enforceable in Australia, the Attorney-General, Philip Ruddock, admitted last night.

Mr Ruddock said Australia had no law making it a crime for Hicks to talk, and the United States would be able to act on a breach only if Hicks came "within their reach".

However, in an interview with the Herald earlier yesterday, Mr Ruddock had said the order preventing Hicks, his family, friends and associates from telling his story was reasonable and enforceable. "What that's suggesting is that the agreement can't be avoided by telling [the story] to a family member and then they say it on his behalf," he said.

AlanT look closer, its just another overnight backflip based on polling. (You have to keep up to date AlanT - See Herald Poll 91% believe Hicks should not be gagged.

This is so fluid you need to stay sharp and keep your eye on the ball (the bouncing ball that everyday tries a new coalition one liner of songbook response to the current swing).

Now if you notice my postcode 2114 - its in Bennelong. On election day there was an incredible atmosphere as people discussed and agreed with the Get-up crowd organising the Hicks message for JWH. Everyone I speak with shares a view. Its not abouot David Hicks and his guilt or innocence. Its about our governments treatment of an Australian citizen. Its about our government's complicity with the USA in enacting unconstitutional retrospective laws to even come up with a basis for charges against Hicks. (reference , Law Council of Australia: http://www.lawcouncil.asn.au/read/2007/2435666831.html

Approximately 10,000 postcards from electors of Bennelong and a petition of 55,000 concerned Australians did the job - not the system.

When a swing is on, a swing is on!

Prepare to be promised anything at whatever future cost to our countries values heritage or economy as JWH attempts to hang on to better the Menzies record. Perhaps he will do it - a few silver coins from the guvnr to the plebs has worked in the past and may well do the trick again. But not I suspect in Bennelong . . . . .

You are right about a fluid situation DO

To be fair, and I'm sure you intend to be, if someone says words like the above ("That suggests") and then says something differently, it would be something less than a change in policy or "Backflip" as you term it.

There are laws in place already that make this sort of nonsense entirely enforceable in the USA and here in Australia too.

AlanT that is an incredible response even from you and just the usual to diffuse the guts of anothers post.

Crystal clear. Hicks his family, friends and associates can not tell the Hicks story. Ruddock says "the order preventing Hicks, his family, friends and associates from telling his story was reasonable and enforceable." How difficult is that AlanT?

Now any views on these matters that prompted the Ruddock double pike with twist - ?

DO thanx for the reiteration of your previous post complete with an opinion peice on the NSW election.

I thought my response was nonconfrontational and reasonable

Again, when someone says, and you quote -"That suggests" - that's hardly a line in the sand to backflip from

Yes I noted that with interest, particularly when 3 hours later ABC Tv news failed to report the second episode - call me touchy? Or call me cynical about the evenhandedness or reporting?

I'd say sloppy by the ABC, given they are increasingly giving a bit less than a ratz arse about timeliness on the TV news! :D

Speaking of switchbacks ... on the ABC Online site the otherday, they ran with "Garuda Pilots were fighting!" shortly followed by "No evidence of arguments on Garuda flight"...

OK ... seems the ABC wasn't simply being sloppy. And it wasn't a lack of evenhandedness.

Apparently, the whole "Oops, did I say 'Hopeless bunch of incompetent losers'? I meant 'Bunch Of Sterling Wieners!'" retraction has been seen, even by the conservative media, as far sadder than the ol' Keelty "Oops, I meant to say I love my job Howard!" backflip, and the ABC was probably just being kind to the poor dude, who, in the government's eyes, has gone from literally knicknamed a "Saint" to more toxic than Brian Burke!:P:P
