stahc Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 look like being on the end of a charitable donation and will finaly be in the market for a lcd or plasma screen...up to 42 inches. my question.....i already have a 2yo high def box. should i run with this for the new screen or do i go for one with the inbuilt "tuna". is inbuilt the way to go or just convenient. i suppose i could take the STB upstairs with the old tv as an option.
mello yello Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 Theres some new Toshiba 100hz LCDs about to hit the market this thread here ....I asked a question and killed the thread I think Dont know about those inbuilt tunas. Arguments have varied from if the tuna stuffs the teles gone and you would have to get a STB anyway....to you cant do firmware upgrades to them...but they are less cluttering and one less power cord to worry about.
Austen Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 No, No, No, No, No........................ Chats mate, you don't want one with an inbuilt tuna ( ), you don't even want an external tuna, you want a PVR. PVR buddy....PVR....Can you say PVR ? Not a tuna, a PVR............ Austen. ( Just my thoughts )

Then say wouldn't it be nice to be able to pause right now or record the rest of the show?

Just be aware that this can backfire, the wife will realise she can make/take phone calls, go to the bathroom, do her hair, all whilst you are sitting there looking at a frozen screen. Trust me, I know this from personal experience.

Austen Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 Dear Mrs Chats, Please can chats have a PVR to go with his new telly ? PVR's replace the trusty VCR, and do so much more as well. Desperate Housewives ? ..... Record every Monday ready just for when you want it. Chasers War ? Recorded every week, no more of chats ringing up from work "Honey, press record on channel 2 right now" Please ???? Austen.
stahc Posted April 5, 2007 Author Posted April 5, 2007 looks like the money will be coming through..........soon? now the eternal question..............40-42" lcd or plasma.......as you may have noticed with most things.......i have no idea

And if you have no idea, you might get a better result anyway
Austen Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Please don't go for a cheap 852 * 480 panel. You'll probably have it for a fair few years, get a decent (Fujitsu) resolution one..................... Austen. (Fujitsu fan-boi )

If it stretches to $3000 I would go for 1 of the Panasonic 50" pva60a which can be had for under $3k needs a set top box though.

I sit 2.8m from screen and wish I had bought the 50.(have 42) as such we are looking at a bigger screen in the foreseeable future.Would have been smarter to buy the 50 the 1st time

Cooksta59 Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Well budget is number 1. Waf approval up there as well. If you are already watching a 44" screen I doubt that you would want to go smaller. there is also the sony sxrd rear pro's but they would blow your budget out of the water.

We've had ours nearly two years now, and honestly, just about every day I say to Mrs Austen..."That's a great picture".....After all this time, it still has the "WOW" factor......... It's been discussed a few times before, and no-one has said "Gee, My 50" is too big", but a few with smaller have said that they wished they had gone for the 50". If you're like me and planning to keep it for a few years, you don't want to be kicking yourself every time you watch it......Tell Mrs chats that the extra $$'s is only a couple of days O/T <====winky working overtime to get you to buy a 50" . Austen.
stahc Posted April 5, 2007 Author Posted April 5, 2007 i'll take mrs chats shopping after easter.............have to look for new carpet and price some timber flooring anyway so why not go the whole hog.
Austen Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 i'll take mrs chats shopping after easter.............have to look for new carpet and price some timber flooring anyway so why not go the whole hog. I like your thinking........You're gonna live with it a long time, do it right and do it once !!! Really, a 50" looks a LOT bigger than a 42"...If you can possibly stretch the $$'s you'll be happy. Dare I say it, heck, if it's what you have to do, buy a decent panel and a $50 Strathfield SD STB to tide you over until you get a couple of days O/T to get a HD Box or PVR......... Or better still, a SD-PVR right away, and save for a HD STB (or vice-versa, HD STB and save for SD-PVR)...........Then you'll record in SD (much more economical with the HDD usage) and watch live TV with the HD box............ Austen.
