Ok, so I very excitedly reconnected my AVC-A1D and instead of running my second pair of surround speakers out of the same surround channels as my 1st set of surround speakers, I connected them to the effects pre-out (via some amplification of course)...sadly these channels appear to emit nothing but a hum from the speakers

Have tried them in 5 channel mode (no real surprise that as 6th and 7th channels there was no music forthcoming) but also there is nothing in THX, DD and DTS mode :D

So, what do they do? and how is some sort of experience (perhaps distantly related to sound) meant to be enjoyed from them :P

Interested in any opinions relating to effects channels (and like a good little Forum dweller I will re-read my user manual for clues :P )

Cheers,

Curious

Curious ;the only thing I can think of is that the A1D has independant switching for a and b surround speakers ;so the back surrounds can be switched on/off according to the input source??I must ask is your amp the same A1D sold before thx select2 and thx ultra2 standards were introduced? If so I would imagine thx surround may be your only option for 6/7 speaker operation?I wish denon changed their amps names once in a while instead of mark 2 etc :P

Aah interesting point cwt, I'll see if I can find a reference to that in the manual (when I find it, been awhile since I put it 'somewhere safe' )

Yes it was Denon's THX flagship model prior to the separation of THX Select from THX Ultra.

I may have to resort to using the surround pre-outs for both sets of speakers like I used to, but this creates a different problem as I am Bi-Amping all speakers now and that means putting a splitter on a splitter for the surround channels :P

Anyhoo, thanks for the tip :P

Curious,

I am new to this forum. But a google search on M&K subwoofers has lead me to you!! (Comments you posted last September about your x2 MX-350's and the MX-5000).

I am based in Melbourne (South East suburbs).

Are you interested in selling one of your subs??... or know anyone that maybe??

Reading your posts, you obviously love them and so do I!!!!

Also, I have found two guys selling their S-150 THX Ultra system's and wanted to hear your thoughts.

Cheers,

Curious ;When the joz mentioned effects channels above the mains[ala yamaha] it made me investigate exactly what thx mode you had.If you have the original firmware the thx is strictly 5.1; not 7.1.

I would enquire of denon if you can upgrade to 7.1 software [ rs 232 port?] ;then your presence outputs will drive your separate 2 ch amp for full thx surround :P

Wow CWT, thanks fr the investigation and tip!

I was aware that it is 5.1, but naively figured that because there are pre-outs (labelled effect) below the Surround pre-outs that they must create a separate effect channel (although none of the modes seem to enable them - DTS DD THX all failed to create a sound)

I have not yet located my manual since moving house several times, so any answers from Denon remain out of reach for now.

I wonder if Denon would include extra surround pre-outs without the technology being present in the AVR to run them

I'll send off an e-mail to Denon, failing any illumination from the manufacturer I wonder if there are any experts on the AVC-A1D out there? (I feel a new thread coming on)

Short answer is 'no', but where I have them mounted (directly rear of the room) is not perhaps where Denon would have me put them :D

I didn't think they were front effects based on their pre-out location below the Surround pre-outs...could easily be wrong on that...need to hunt further for the trusty manual

Curious; I recall Harman Kardon released similar amps where you had to add a extra 2 ch power amp for back surrounds ;even when thx upgraded to 7.1 and dd ex first happened.I found a picture of the back panel [no rs232 port unfortunately] but If you buy a hd player with 7.1 analog output[the pannybdmp10] ;your amp can handle that through its 8 ch mutichannel input. This shows good insight into future proofing at the time :P At least you can use the pre out back surrounds this way If denon dont come good :D

Again thank you cwt, perhaps my future purchase of a HD-DVD machine will yield some results

Wait a minute...I think you hit the proverbial nail on the head! Another look at the back panel of my unit reveals 6 channel ext in as well as (wait for it) 8 channel ext in...woo hoo!!!

It would appear that all I need to do is to purchase my future HD-DVD player as a 7.1 pre-out model and I can use the effects channel on the controller vis a separate 2 channel amp :P

Thanks for clearing up the mystery CWT...youdaman :D

Cheers,

Curious
