k00k1503559827 Posted April 3, 2007 Author Posted April 3, 2007 Pardon my absolute stupidity here please I watched Casino last night through my Pio DV-383 on my Pana 50" HD panel, and the picture quality absolutely sucked. Shocking definition and heaps of jaggies. Its running through component. Is this because the Pio isn't upscaling the image?? I really dont know, sorry. The whole picture seemed stretched sideways as well. However, the reviews I have read of this DVD is that its a great transfer. http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/Reviews/Casino.asp

Ata Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 I'd say the Sony.http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/sho...mp;articles=133 There is no mention of the Pioneer on that page, is there a similar rating scheme for the Pioneer?

The Secrets Benchmarks never run there tests for the 696, only the 490 but i'd stay away from that one at all costs. The 696 is supposedly a very good player but for slightly cheaper the Sony produces excellent results and is a steal.

So if they got either the Sony or the Pio 696, they'd be buying a very good player? I think I may as well get one for myself, until I decide what to do re the whole HD-DVD/BR thing...
Ata Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 Anyone know if the TEAC 5120 is any good? It appears to be the cheapest upconverting DVD player ATM ($139 locally). I would think it is a rebadged model. I am looking for an inexpensive backup player for my MCE box.

I've done the same thing regarding the Blu-ray, HD-DVD formats. I want to wait until prices drop and theres more titles to choose from. Besides i think most of the new release DVDs these days have great PQ.

I wouldn't recommend a Teac DVD player to anyone. You would be definately better off spending a little extra for a better brand.
