DrP Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 Over the past few days I've had the questionable pleasure of having to be chauffeured around at times due to lack of a car. Why questionable? As I've said before we need better driver training and my opinion of this has only been reinforced over these past few days. Based on the experience I've put together a short list of helpful tips: 1. Its a good idea to keep your car to the left of the centre line, especially when traffic is coming the other way! 2. Its a good idea to keep your car to the right of the line that delineates the parking area. 3. Straddling those lines with your car while driving is a no no! 4. Driving in the parking area is a no no, especially when there are cars parked there. 5. No, a clearway sign does not mean you can drive in the lane outside the clearway times! 6. That wheel thing in front of you is for controlling your car's direction. Its a good idea to keep at least one hand on it. 7. The throttle pedal is not a switch. It has more than an on and off position. You are in a car, not a rocket. 8. The brake pedal is not a switch either. 9. Speed limits are just that, a limit. Not a target. If the conditions don't suit, you don't have to travel at the signed limit. 10. It's a LIMIT. You shouldn't be going faster! So does anyone else have any handy driving tips for the younger generation? It might be time to fit a Jesus bar to cars
digitalj Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 11. Indicate before coming into a roundabout if turning right. 12. Yellow lights mean stop, don't attempt to race them.
Aloysius Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 13. Avoid going close, in front, behind, or sideways, to white Hyundai Excels driven by young females usually sporting blond ponytails. They are erratic, scary, and very fast - and thats when they're driving.
digitalj Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 14. Don't drink and drive. 15. turn off your mobile if you're driving
AndrewW Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 17. You should only ever indicate right at an roundabout if you are actually going to f'ing turn right (ie not if you're turning left or going straight ahead)
ibanez5 Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 18. Don't do 50 in a 90 zone unless there is a torrential downpour.
digitalj Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 20. Get off the ****ing road. 20.b or at least stay off main roads.
mello yello Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 21 Avoid overtaking Highway Patrol vehicles who appear to be doing the speed limit. 22 Do not alight from your vehicle unless it is completely stationary. 23 Do not park on busy level crossings....spare a thought for other commuters. 24 When towing a caravan or trailer ensure it is properly secured before driving off. 25 If you find yourself on the inside lane of a roundabout and cannot exit due to heavy traffic....stay on the roundabout....help will arrive. Happy Motoring
pneu Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 26. Watch the road ahead. Seems kind of obvious but some drivers tend to gawk around a lot.
stahc Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 27. i don't really drive a volvo...........but i seem to have got some mileage out of it
Aloysius Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 19. what if i'm driving a volvo 19a. " what if i'm driving a volvo" - with my hat pulled down over my eyes travelling at 73kph
Aloysius Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 27. If you are in a long line of cars, all doing the legal speed limit , all spaced appropriately, don't pull out on a passing lane, slowly pass one or two vehicles then piss everyone off as remerging goes on back to single lane again
Stevob Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 28. Keep a safe distance (minimum 2 seconds) between your car and the car in front. 29. Don't drive in other drivers blind spots. 30. Keep a close eye on your mirrors when approaching a stop light at an intersection. There may be a motorcyclist or bicyclist approaching from between the cars or between the cars and the side of the road. Give them some room. They may not always show their appreciation, but you will feel better for being courteous. 31. Keep a safe distance (minimum 2 seconds) between your car and the car in front. 32. Keep a safe distance especially when travelling below the limit. 33. Don't use your car as a weapon to threaten others. 34. Never pull in front of a truck when approaching a stop light. 35. Use round blind spot mirrors on both exterior mirrors. They enable you to check if a lane is clear before changing lanes. It is quicker, safer and more comprehensive than looking over your shoulder. 36. Reverse park wherever possible, especially at shopping centres and at home. 37. Indicate your intentions. 38. Always use the indicator before applying the brake (where applicable). This will 1) ensure that the driver behind knows that you will soon be slowing before you actually brake and 2) a flashing indicator has more visual impact before the brake lights are activated. 39. Keep a safe distance (minimum 2 seconds) between your car and the car in front. 40. Hands free telephones are just as dangerous as holding the damn things to your ear. It is not the lack of a hand on the wheel, rather than the mental distraction which has the greatest danger associated with it. 41. Don't drive in other drivers blind spots.

Steve C Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 42 Always carry a towel in the glove compartment 43. Dispose of any blood stained towel used to clean tire brace used in excessive road rage incident brought on by a vehicle being driven by a mindless loon nearly causing the loss of your life, in a responsible manner.
Steve C Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 Shouldn't the gap be 3 seconds? So is that 3 seconds when travelling at 40kph, or is it 3 seconds at 60, or 3 seconds at 80... I was led to believe that you should allow a gap that's dependant on your speed and the road conditions. Experience has surprisingly reinforced what I learned from my instructors in this regard.
