jeanpierre Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 I noticed last night that Channel 518 was carrying live AFL to NSW, Qld & ACT on Channel 518 as part of the AFL Rights Deal. Obviously all in Victoria, SA & WA were locked out from this to wait for the delayed 7 telecast @ 8.30pm. My question is, why can't Fox & 9 do a deal to telecast the 7.30pm NRL Friday Night game on the same basis into the southern states on 518 live, rather than having to wait until after 11pm to get it through 9? Surely ratings is not an issue at that time of night?? JP
MattWinter Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 Well from a practical point of view 518 can still only be used to show one thing at one time - really the AFL game was shown live everywhere, just blocked out to the Southern States. But I reckon Fox Sports should start a new channel (called "fox sports plus"), which could show two different feeds - that way they could use it to show AFL to NSW/QLD/ACT on Fridays and NRL to SA/VIC/WA - then they could also use it to show extra AFL games that certain states miss out on completely (eg. today SA/WA don't get to see Kangaroos v Collingwood untill 9:30pm and QLD doesn't get to see Sydney v West Coast untill even later - because both FTA and Fox shows the same games into those states today). They could use it to show a few other things as well - maybe an extra EPL game when they have heaps on at once, as well as live sport that can't be shown on Fox 1/Fox 2 or Fox 3 because of other commitments - like the Cricket World Cup and the English Championship game this morning.
Forest Lake Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 Yes i agree Foxtel need to show friday night NRL games into Victoria to at least get some interest in the Game that is dominated by AFL.. Then again Foxtel obviously have programming issues when Live in QLD tonight you can watch Brisbane v Hawthorn on channel 10 at 7.00pm and you can see the same game live on Fox Sports 1 obviously they forgot about the game being played down in Sydney between the Swans and Eagles.

I blame the FTA Networks and the fans who think their club deserves all games on FTA. But it would be great if foxtel showed the games we are missing out on - I just hope they are allowed to.

How odd, because on Friday night on Main Event the watermark on the AFL game was FOX SPORTS PLUS LIVE (the plus symbol was in the blue box where the number usually was. On a lighter note (and on topic) - no one in the southern states really care about NRL, and NRL are too stupid to negotiate their TV rights so that everyone gets coverage - they are too scared of what Ch9 and Fox Sports will say if they ask them to broadcast the games into Southern States at a time where everyone can watch them

Forest Lake Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 Ok i am glad someone cleared that up i thought the + symbol was a 4 when i watched it on friday night. As you get older the eyesight starts to fail hehe

As for Ch. Nein, do you honestly expect AFL Eddie to get behind the sport, for all his hot air League fans knew we'd be getting the short end of the stick again. NRL games shown on FTA into Vic at a reasonable hour have rated well above the AFL matches broadcast to the NSW & QLD market, too bad there's so few, as far as NSW & QLD ratings go for AFL - 7 and 10 have bought themselves a lame duck, hasn't stopped them pushing it, I mean ratings of 97,000 for Sydney and 78,000 for Brisbane in the Brisbane Vs Sydney game on FTA are pretty bad but they still push it, the same commintment from Nine sure wouldn't hurt in the long run. Foxtel know they're on a good thing, almost 3/4 of Foxtels top 100 programs last year were Rugby League matches, the first Monday Night Football game on Fox acheived ratings high enough to win it's slot on FTA and FS3 is the most watched of all the PTV sports channels - FS3 is where the NRL has been pushed to, bastards know that people will pay to watch it so they make them pay a little more.
