Got a mate interested in buying a tv, i recommended the samsung 50" plasma which he can get for $2550 which is pretty cheap.

However, are there any 1920x1080 displays around the $3k price point that could be more worthwhile getting? He will be using the display with an xbox 360 which of course can display games at 1920x1080 so he would be missing out on the full benefits of this resolution with the samsung.

By 'full benefits' you're presumably referring to the 1.3% improvement in PQ he could discern? Not being facicious, just thinking that at the moment (and as a general rule) paying for 'bleeding edge' is usually a marketing game.

99% of Xbox 360 games are 1280x720 so it might not matter much. Most of the good sized 1920x1080 displays around $3K are cheap Chinese garbage that wouldn't look as good as a decent 1366x768 plasma anyway.

The xbox360 looks great on the samsung 50 inch. Have to watch the screen burn though

Wait next month for the release of the new samsung 1080p panels. You will be able to pick up the 40" screen for 3K or under with abit of bargaining.

For gaming that's not true at all, any games without anti-aliasing will have jaggies and a good way to get rid of em is to use a higher resolution, in fact the very thing you say is not going to improve quality is the same thing that actually will improve it. Because the eyes have trouble resolving that resolution at a distance the jaggies in the game appear to get blended together in a similar way to what anti-aliasing does. Even some games with AA will still appear to be clearer and noticably better in PQ at a higher resolution.

However for normal TV viewing you are correct and the difference is minimal unless you have superhuman eyes like mine. Also as mentioned in previous posts very few games will actually use the full 1920x1080 on a 360, but it might still look better than a 1366x768 set as the scaling artifacts will be less apparent (and again with games these are MUCH more apparent than normal TV).

1920x1080

From the 1920x1080 lcds i've seen the difference is very noticeable.... far less jagged edges and a picture quality now truly equaling plasma.

As the poster writes.... the price at the moment is high though... i am in the same situation.... will i get a nice 42" plasma right now or wait until the lcd 1920x1080's come down to a more sensible price. Seen some for around 3500 so may take a while for them to hit the comfort zone for me, around low 2k's...

Cheers...
