Hi All,

I am looking at buying a plasma or LCD "40 to "50 from DJ's as I have scored some gift cards for there.

The brands they stock are:

Panasonic, Sony, Pioneer, LG, Fujitsu (I am not even gonna mention Acer)

A STB is not needed nor are speakers.

Any guidence would be appreciated.

The first thing to do is to decide which you prefer Plasma or LCD then go from there.

Sony LCDs seem to highly rated here.

And as Peter said the Panasonic plasma also (However, don't disregard Fujitsu, Pioneer and Hitachi).

Ok so you would recomend the Panasonic 600a50. Are there any thing overly negative about his one?

Which Sony would you recommend a 720p is all I need. I remember there was abig thing about the 'S' was good but the 'V' was crap so some model numbers would be appreciated?

Thank for the threads and info so far....

The smart choice is the Panasonic 50PX600a its arguably the best plasma on the market and recent price drops mean it should sell for about $3300-3500

Not sure what thread you read saying the V's were "crap". I think most comments have been to the contrary. I'm perfectly happy with my 40V.

Suggest you settle whether you prefer Plasma or LCD as already said above. They each have their benefits. Both are good but each have some degree of compromise. Let your eyes do the deciding but remember as I have posted elsewhere that you MUST have access to change settings on any TV you are considering because the PQ in most stores is questionable and standard settings often don't show the sets at their best. And inputs also make a considerable difference. Go to some specialists if possible and try your own DVD's, or ones you like.

My 2c.

Wait a little while mate. There is alot of new models on the way around April/May 07 from both the plasma & lcd camps.

Remember that new isn't always better and you could save cash and pick up a better unit in the process.

I reckon with $4k you could definitely get a 50" - and as long as you seat 3m or more away from it, it would be fine ....

The best PQ IMHO of this lot is the Fuji - however the Price x performance is not the best of the bunch ... same applies for the pioneer ....

I believe, like many said before, the Panasonic is a good overall panel and you should be able to get a 50" for around the $3.5-4k mark .... if DJ's also stock Hitachi, they have a new range coming out soon which could be worth a look - again around the $3.50-$4k mark should get a 50" .....

for some reason I'm not a fan of LG .... and however much I like the Sony, I'm not a fan of LCD for large displays .....

have fun testing the panels out - take your favourite DVDs, also be sure to test the connection to the panel - ie: the screen may look like 7HD, but the store may have connected an STB via composite to it... making it look attrocious.... don't laugh ... I've seen this before at DJs ....

Even though how much i like the Panasonic plasmas you have to be wary of the purple snakes. Even the new models are supposedly affected. I recently bought a 42pv60 and although the snakes are pretty much non-existant compared to some of the pictures floating around, it has made it's appearence on one occasion. The 50" models are supposedly unaffected, so if your looking at a 50" not to worry. But if i had of had $4k to spend on my plasma i would have gone the Pioneer.
